Position: Assistant Professor of Journalism

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience

Required Qualifications:
  • M.A. or M.F.A. in journalism, mass communication or relevant discipline
  • Professional journalism experience covering historically underrepresented communities such as, but not limited to, Latinx, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Black and/or Indigenous populations
  • Expertise in digital journalism tools and storytelling strategies (audio, television news and/or multimedia)
  • Demonstrated potential or excellence in teaching at the college level
  • Record of and/or demonstrated potential for successful research, scholarly and creative activities
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in journalism, mass communication or relevant discipline. Degree at the time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2022.
  • Exceptional professional journalism experience for at least five years that is equivalent to the breadth and depth of skills and knowledge associated with a terminal degree
  • Demonstrated achievement in scholarly research and publication or a defined research agenda
  • Teaching experience at the college level, especially in journalism
  • Commitment to the student success and equity missions of the department and university
  • Activity or leadership in professional journalism affiliation and advocacy organizations such as, but not limited to, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, National Association of Black Journalists, Asian American Journalists Association, Native American Journalists Association, Society of Professional Journalists and Association of LGBTQ Journalists
  • Experience of successfully working with populations demographically and socioeconomically similar to the CSULB student body
Duties:
  • Teach undergraduate journalism courses [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
  • Curriculum and program development and keep content current
  • Maintain and engage in original scholarly research that leads to peer-reviewed presentations and publications
  • Contribute to shared governance by serving on committees and participating in other activities
  • Serve as the faculty advisor to a student club or media associated with the department
  • Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community
The department is home to close to 40 full- and part-time faculty members and around 600 majors and minors. We are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and we offer four academic programs: Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations, Minor in Journalism and Minor in Public Relations. The department houses award-winning student media (Daily 49er, DIG Magazine and DIG en Español) and hosts active campus chapters of national organizations such as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Public Relations Student Society of America, National Association of Black Journalists and Asian American Journalists Association. The department’s curriculum is digital centric, and we are committed to keeping it current and relevant.

The CSULB campus is located in the second largest media market in the United States and is in the heart of Southern California, 25 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, 15 miles west of Disneyland and minutes from the Pacific Ocean.
