Faculty Position Available Assistant Professor Landscape History/Design Theory Department of Landscape Architecture College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Cornell University

Position: Assistant Professor, Tenure Track Location: Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-5701. The academic home for this position is the Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). Position Description and Responsibilities: The Department of Landscape Architecture invites applications for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The position includes 70% teaching and 30% research responsibilities. The successful applicant will bring experience and expertise in the area of landscape history and/or design theory with innovative teaching and professional experience.

Outstanding research scholarship is expected, as is excellence in and commitment to teaching, translation of knowledge, and advising and mentoring of students. We seek colleagues with an outstanding record demonstrating success and promise across all these areas, and who will be supported by and contribute to a vibrant culture of inclusive excellence at Cornell. The successful candidate will also engage in service and leadership activities within their department, the college, and university, and relevant professional societies.

While we view every landscape as an opportunity to create a healthier, more inspiring, socially just, and ecologically responsive world, we also recognize that many deep, systematic, and lasting inequities in the built environment result from a range of discriminatory practices closely related to the field including harmful zoning, infrastructure planning, natural resource (dis)possession and management, transportation and other planning and design decisions. As designers, we strive to address these challenges; we also recognize the complex history of our discipline in creating and upholding many of these harmful social structures. We are seeking a person who can engage our students in dialogues on both the accomplishments and harsh realities of our discipline’s history, so they will create more equitable futures. The candidate is expected to conduct related research and/or creative inquiry that contributes critical perspective to the discipline and profession.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching two design studios and two research seminars per year that offer perspective on critical projects and precedents in landscape history, historical inequities in design and planning, design and justice in communities, and/or other related subject areas.

Background: Over its 115-year history, Cornell’s Department of Landscape Architecture has achieved national recognition for its excellence in innovative teaching pedagogies that challenge students to become responsible, engaged and creative designers. Our department is adapting to meet the critical issues affecting the planet and its inhabitants through a continued emphasis on the agency of design.

The Department offers three unique degrees. The MLA provides the foundational, historical, theoretical, technical, and skills-based grounding of the field of landscape architecture. The MPS degree offers students a one-year immersive course of study, including a collaborative research project. The BSLA is the only undergraduate professional degree in landscape architecture offered at an Ivy League institution and combines university requirements in biological, physical and social sciences, humanities, and written and oral communication within a studio-based design curriculum.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an accredited degree in landscape architecture and be expected to be developing a body of rigorous research and/or creative inquiry in landscape history and/or design theory. An MLA is required and a PhD or license within the field or related discipline is desirable.
