The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking an experimental Research Associate to work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, with a focus on the development of machine learning techniques and applications for ATLAS / LHC data analysis. The LHC presents ideal opportunities for physics measurements and searches, developing experimental experience in a challenging environment of rapidly increasing luminosity, and the development of new machine learning applications at the energy frontier. This position allows participation in a selection of experimental areas that SLAC is involved in, and in a variety of physics and machine learning topics. The successful candidate is expected to contribute significantly to the development of machine learning for the LHC. Potential applications include data analysis methods, simulation, reconstruction, or trigger, using a variety of hardware accelerators such as GPUs / FPGAs / custom ASICs. The successful candidate will also contribute significantly in physics analysis efforts. The SLAC ATLAS group currently leads analysis efforts in Higgs and di-Higgs searches and measurements, b-tagging and tracking, and jet and jet substructure physics and performance, but the group is open to developing new directions in physics analysis efforts. In addition, the broader SLAC group has substantial detector involvements in Pixel/ITK, Trigger/DAQ and Computing. The position is expected to be based at SLAC in Menlo Park, but the possibility to initially start or be based at CERN can be discussed. The anticipated start time for this position is Fall 2019.

The SLAC ATLAS group consists of approximately 20 scientists, postdoctoral research associates, and students, of which 5 are currently based at CERN. More information on the SLAC ATLAS group can be found on our web page http://atlas.slac.stanford.edu

Qualifications:
These are highly competitive positions as part of the general research associate program at SLAC, requiring a background of demonstrated excellence in research and a recent PhD in experimental particle physics, computer science, statistics, or a related field, or having completed the requirements for such a degree prior to starting the position. Experience with research utilizing machine learning software (e.g. Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch, etc.) and associated research tools is highly beneficial. The position is initially for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal.

Applications are due by July 12, 2019 for full consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes nominations of women and minority group members. Hires at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are subject to Department of Energy approval, and are required to complete Environmental Safety & Health training.
