Postdoctoral Associate

The Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate to collaborate on and support a new project studying long term health and economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Sanford School of Public Policy is among the nation’s leading public policy schools that is home to faculty conducting cutting edge research on pressing public policy issues globally.

The project, called “Survey of Health Trends – SEHAT”, is led by Prof. Manoj Mohanan at Sanford with co-investigators from UNC, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, University College London, and Duke. The SEHAT study will lead to creation of a new high-frequency large-scale panel dataset of health outcomes from over 167,000 individual members who will be surveyed three times a year for three years. The Postdoctoral Associate will work jointly with Prof. Mohanan and co-investigators on the SEHAT study, be a key member of the SEHAT research team located in Durham NC, and will contribute to all research activities in the project. The post-doc will have opportunities to participate in planned analyses of the SEHAT data, to develop research manuscripts using early access to SEHAT data, and to develop grant proposals for research projects building on SEHAT.


Responsibilities:
As a key member of the SEHAT study team, the responsibilities for the position include: 
  • Development and finalization of survey tools and field protocols for SEHAT 
  • Coordination with field partners in India on survey execution 
  • Data management including data documentation and data cleaning to facilitate research and future public release of data 
  • Analysis of data (STATA expertise required; familiarity with R / SAS / Python / other programs is a plus) 
  • Supervision of research assistants and coordination with investigators at collaborating institutions 
  • Collaborating with the study team and contributing to research manuscripts 
Applicants should have a PhD in economics, epidemiology, health policy, or related disciplines. Applicants expecting to complete their PhD in the fall are encouraged to apply, provided they can start working on the project in October. Research experience with complex health data and strong writing skills are required. Some background or demonstrated interest in at least one of the following areas is preferred: population health, mental health, child development, econometrics of panel data for health, or machine learning. Familiarity with research in South Asia will be highly valuable. The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to work independently.
