The Duke Center for Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Infectious Diseases (WaSH-AID) is a collaborative translational research team that develops and deploys novel technology-based solutions for health and environmental challenges.

This position will support two program areas: 1) the COVID Sewage Sampler / smart toilet for early warning of disease, and 2) international field testing of onsite treatment technologies (US-based remote support of in-country teams).

The ideal candidate is a MS with interest in applied research and will have 1) practical experience in microbiology (cell culture, biochemical assays) 2) experience with designing and executing novel studies in challenging environments, and 3) an ability and willingness to work with human waste streams, particularly feces and their associated pathogens. Task execution requires a creative problem-solving attitude, willingness to learn new skills quickly, and a focus on meeting deadlines across multiple tasks. We are looking for someone who is motivated to have hands-on experience with prototype development and maintenance and comfortable working in a laboratory environment with human excreta and pathogens.

Duties will include apparatus assembly, experiment execution, environmental sample collection, data recording and analysis, report preparation in narrative and PowerPoint form. Work location is Duke University in Durham, NC. Travel, both domestic and International, may be required once COVID-related restrictions are lifted.

Excellent communication skills and teamwork are required, particularly for managing execution and reporting in field team work.
