The Department of Physics at the University of Florida invites applications for full-time, nine-month, tenure-accruing positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin August 16, 2023. Searches are being conducted in five areas, described below. All applicants will have a Ph.D. in Physics. Salaries are competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience, and include a full benefits package.

Experimental High Energy Physics - The area of interest is the experimental particle physics research conducted at the Large Hadron Collider with the CMS experiment. UF has one of the largest US university groups in the CMS experiment, comprising several faculty members, students, postdocs, scientists, and engineers. The group currently leads projects and teams in the areas of physics analyses, detector and trigger upgrades, operations, computing, and software. Projects include measurements and searches involving the Higgs boson, a variety of new physics searches, muon detector, and trigger upgrades and operations, and a Tier-2 computing center. Applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu (search job 524028). Complete applications will be reviewed beginning November 1, 2022, and the position will remain open until filled. Applicants may contact the search chair, Prof. Korytov (korytov@ufl.edu), with any questions.

Experimental Quantum Information Science (QIS) - Highly qualified candidates from all areas of QIS, including but not limited to quantum sensing, quantum computation, quantum materials, generation of entangled states, and quantum optics, are encouraged to apply. Presently, the department has a broad range of research activities that span the discipline, with the work complemented by a strong condensed matter theory group and the Quantum Theory Project (QTP). Modern laboratory space and competitive start-up funds will be provided. Applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu (search job 524234). To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by November 15th, 2022. For more information, please contact Prof. Hamlin (jhamlin@ufl.edu).

Experimental Gravitational Wave Physics - The research area is instrument science for the detection of gravitational waves. The Florida gravitational-wave group is actively involved in the LIGO, LISA and Cosmic Explorer collaborations, carrying out research across the spectrum from theory and data analysis, through technology development, instrument modeling, and design, to direct hardware contributions to detectors. The experimental group currently leads projects in the LIGO and Cosmic Explorer Input Optics, the A+ squeezing upgrade to LIGO, and performance testing of the LISA Telescope, as well as a wide range of simulation studies and an international undergraduate student exchange program. Applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu (search job 524155). To ensure full consideration, applications must be submitted by November 28, 2022. For more information, please contact Prof. Tanner (tanner@phys.ufl.edu).

Particle Theory - We seek highly qualified candidates from all areas of particle theory including beyond the Standard Model physics, string theory, collider physics, quantum gravity, cosmology, and dark matter studies. This position offers the opportunity to interact with the Department’s research efforts in theoretical astrophysics and condensed matter physics, experimental particle physics (CMS, Belle II, DUNE), dark matter detection (ADMX, CDMS, ALPS) and gravitational wave detection (LIGO, LISA). It also provides access to the UF HiPerGator research computer center. Applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu (search job 523991). To ensure full consideration, applications must be submitted by December 1, 2022. For more information, please contact Prof. Sikivie (het22@phys.ufl.edu).

Theoretical Astrophysics - We are interested in applications from qualified candidates in all areas of Astrophysics, including those who would further broaden and/or deepen the research portfolio of the department. Presently, the Theoretical Astrophysics group engages in a broad range of research activities in gravitational waves, multi-messenger astrophysics, stellar evolution, black hole physics, planetary atmospheres, galaxy evolution, cosmology, general relativity, quantum gravity, and dark matter. The Theoretical Astrophysics faculty also maintain close ties with the Department of Astronomy; and are heavily involved in gravitational wave research in conjunction with ongoing UF experimental interests in the LIGO, LISA, and Cosmic Explorer projects, as well as dark matter searches such as CDMS, ADMX, and ALPS. Applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu (search job 524030). To ensure full consideration, applications must be submitted by December 2, 2022. For more information, please contact Prof. Blecha (lblecha@ufl.edu).

For all positions, relevant postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse undergraduate and graduate student body, while establishing a well-recognized research program, is essential. Applications must be submitted online at jobs.ufl.edu and must include: (1) a cover letter, (2) a curriculum vitae with publication list, (3) a research statement, (4) a statement of teaching philosophy, (5) a statement of past and/or planned contributions to diversity and inclusivity in physics, and (6) at least three confidential letters of recommendation. Reference providers will only be notified of their upload link once an application is submitted in full, so early completion of the application is highly recommended.

The UF Department of Physics comprises 50 faculty-leading innovative research across the fields of physics. The department enjoys a multitude of synergies internally and with other university units and global initiatives. We particularly welcome applicants who can contribute to a diverse and inclusive environment through their scholarship, teaching, mentoring, and professional service.

Available resources in the department include machine and electronics shops with experienced technicians and a state-of-the-art helium liquefaction facility. Strong research opportunities exist with the affiliated, on-campus National High Magnetic Field Laboratory High B/T Facility, as do collaborative opportunities with faculty in other UF departments, including a major university-scale Artificial Intelligence initiative. Facilities for micro/nanofabrication and characterization are available at the nearby Research Service Centers in the UF Nanoscale Research Facility. The University of Florida is home to HiPerGator (https://www.rc.ufl.edu/services/hipergator/), one of the most powerful high-performance computers at a US public university.

All candidates for employment are subject to a pre-employment screening, including a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education. The selected candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered “official” if a designation of “Issued to Student” is visible. Degrees earned from an educational institution outside of the United States require evaluation by a professional credentialing service provider approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES); see http://www.naces.org/.
