Postdoctoral Positions in Protein Biochemistry and Engineering Research at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

The Qiao Lab in the Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry (CBC), School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore is seeking one talented postdoctoral fellow with expertise in protein biochemistry and engineering to join us.

Our group is interested in understanding the microbiota-host interactions from a chemical perspective. The identifications of microbiota-derived small molecules in the host circulatory system offer new insights on the broad-reaching effects of the gut microbiota. Recently, our studies showed that soluble bacterial peptidoglycan (PGN) fragments are ubiquitously present in sera of human and a number of animals including bovine, horse, sheep, rabbit and mice, but they are undetectable in germ-free mice. To explore the physiological relevance of microbiota-derived PGNs, we showed that modulating the PGN levels can affect autoimmune arthritis development in mice model, and interestingly, circulating PGNs are present at significantly higher levels in autoimmune disease patients such as RA and SLE. Thus, these circulating PGNs may act as signaling molecules in the microbe-host crosstalk. Our research group takes multidisciplinary approach to understand the life cycle of these circulating PGNs from their origins, transportation, structures, distribution, and functions. Such insights do not only answer fundamental biology questions, but may also establish PGN as new effector molecules in the microbiota-host crosstalk, and lead to new therapeutic interventions. Our research is generously funded by the NTU Nanyang Assistant Professorship (NAP) start-up grant as well as the prestigious National Research Foundation Fellowship, Class of 2020. The successful candidate should possess the following: • A Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, chemical biology or related field. • Expertise in molecular cloning, protein over-expression and purification, in vitro assay development, as well as protein engineering. Candidates with experiences in mammalian cell culture and insect/mammalian purification systems will be considered first. • Highly motivated, committed, and capable to work independently as well as in a group. • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals • Good communication skills in English (both written and oral)

Compensation and benefits package will be internationally competitive (including annual base salary, performance-based bonus, medical insurance and vacation leave), and will be commensurate with experiences and qualifications.
