Call for Applications for Tenure-tracking Faculty Position

Department of Space Systems Engineering,

Kyushu Institute of Technology, Kitakyushu, Japan


1.     Number of positions: One (associate professor or assistant professor)

2.     Affiliation: Department of Space Systems Engineering, Kyushu Institute of Technology

3.     Outline:

Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) is a national university founded in 1909. In April, 2018, Kyutech established the Department of Space Systems Engineering. The department has the only undergraduate academic curriculum in Japan focused on space engineering. The department was established based on revised university missions where aerospace was identified as a key area of research and education of the future. Since 2013, Kyutech also runs Space Engineering International Course, an English-based post-graduate program focused on space engineering.

The educational goal of the department is to foster human resources equipped with a profound view of project management and systems engineering, through practical training using satellites, rockets and others. The department promotes research related to space systems. In addition, the department collaborates with members of other departments and with external institutions to solve the domestics and/or international social issues through space application.

To strengthen the faculty of the department, we seek a talented person who is eager to promote education and research in the space field (space engineering, space science, or space utilization).


4.  Content of work:

(1)    Promote research and education related to space engineering, space science or space utilization

(2)    Promote space-related education and research projects on and off campus and contribute to the community

(3)    Participate in the undergraduate curriculum

(4)    Participate in the post-graduate curriculum, especially Space Engineering International Course

(5)    Supervise student research (undergraduate and post-graduate)

(6)    Take part in school management


5. Starting date: As soon as possible, but no later than April 1, 2021


6. Period: 5 years

This is a tenure-tracking position. At the second half of the third year, there will be a mid-term evaluation. At the early stage of the fifth year, there will be a tenure examination. Once the candidate passes the tenure examination, the person receives the tenure position.


7Tenure-tracking period

1) Two or three faculty members will serve as mentors to give advices to the tenure-tracking faculty member about the research, external funding, industry collaboration, patent filling, team management, laboratory management, activities at professional societies, etc.

2) In addition to the annual research funding provided by the school, the tenure tracking faculty will receive 1,000,000 yen in the first year as start-up support funding.

3) The tenure-tracking faculty member shall receive professional development training.


8. Qualifications:

1) Can conduct research and education related to space engineering, space science or space application

2) Solid command of English or Japanese (Speaking, Listening, Writing). If Japanese is mother language, the candidate shall have sufficient English proficiency to teach for Space Engineering International Course. 

3) Have a doctoral degree or expect to have the degree before starting



9. Salary:

Based on Kyutech regulations.
