The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research seeks an Electrical Engineer to support several of its research groups in characterizing and developing scientific CMOS (sCMOS) imaging sensors and cameras for use in future ground- and space-based astronomical instruments. MKI has provided optical/near-IR imaging and spectroscopic instrumentation for the Magellan 6.5m telescopes and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS); and spectroscopic imaging X-ray instruments for the Chandra X-ray Observatory and ASCA, HETE-II and Suzaku satellites. Several MKI research groups are developing or planning ambitious future instruments for use on the ground or in space on platforms ranging in size from 1m to 25m optical telescopes on the ground and from Cubesats to large NASA observatories in space. Will develop custom electronic data acquisition and control systems for sCMOS sensors and camera systems in laboratory environments. Responsibilities include sensor interface board design, layout, and testing; designing and implementing high-speed FPGA-based digital data acquisition systems; developing and implementing hardware and software data interfaces to UNIX/Linux analysis systems; working closely with MKI research and technical staff, postdocs, and students; interpreting sensor behavior and test results obtained in sensor/camera characterization and scientific observation activities; advising and mentoring early-career research group members; supporting the preparation of papers/presentations/proposals led by others; and other duties as needed. REQUIRED: B.S. in electrical engineering or closely related field; at least two years’ experience developing solid-state imaging sensor data acquisition systems; good verbal and written communication skills; effective self-management skills; and familiarity with vacuum testing and thermal control of solid-state imaging sensors or cameras, optical test systems, research in a laboratory environment, and/or development of scientific instruments for space applications. PREFERRED: proficiency with KiCad.

The initial appointment is for a two-year term with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability.

The successful applicant will work in laboratories on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and will be encouraged to participate fully in the life of the broader MKI and MIT communities. MIT offers a comprehensive benefits package.

Applications consisting of a cover letter, resume/CV and contact information for three references should be submitted at the MIT Careers site, this position is job number 21725, and will be accepted until the position is filled.
