The Duke University School of Medicine invites applications from innovative and creative educators for a full-time, teaching position in organ systems-based medical physiology. This position will be filled at the rank and title of Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice of Medical Education. The incumbent would join a cadre of teaching faculty in the Duke University School of Medicine who teach foundational science in the preclerkship doctor of medicine curriculum for first-year medical students and in the Duke Master of Biomedical Sciences (MBS) program, with primary responsibility for directing the Organ Systems course in the Duke MBS program. The incumbent will also contribute content in the domain of cellular and molecular biology, histology, genetics, biochemistry or neuroscience and lead small-group seminar discussions elsewhere in the core curriculum of the Duke MBS program. The incumbent will have service responsibilities within the Duke MBS, as assigned by the program director.


For the Master of Biomedical Sciences program:


  • Co-direct Cell Sciences 
  • Co-direct Organ Systems 
  • Seminar session small group leader and grader for Human Structure course
  • Conduct review sessions in these areas as needed
  • Collaborate with other MBS Program course directors to ensure appropriate curricular integration
  • Contribute to the faculty governance of the program through participation in monthly meetings of the MBS Faculty and service on one or more MBS committees
  • Support the annual MBS admissions process through service as a screener and/or reviewer of student applications
  • Participate in MBS student recruitment activities on campus and online 
  • Participate in MBS annual orientation events and any other community-wide activities for MBS students, staff, faculty and administration 
  • Support the MBS Postdoctoral Associate in Medical Education (participation in position description, interviewing, selection, mentoring)
  • Promote educational scholarship as a cornerstone of the MBS program’s development and contribution to the University and the field

For the Doctor of Medicine program:

Contribute where possible to teaching in medical student curriculum particularly in the areas of Histology, Physiology, Anatomy, and Neurosciences

  • Assist with integration of neuroscience content across the pre-clinical and clinical curriculum, and, pending demonstrated proficiency, assuming co-directorship of neurosciences.
  • Conduct review sessions and/or tutoring in these areas as needed
  • Identify and incorporate new learning technologies, resources, and/or strategies into the curriculum as appropriate
  • Participate in the School of Medicine Curriculum Renewal project
  • Conduct educational research
  • Provide guidance and assistance to the Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs and the Assistant Dean for Basic Sciences Education to advance innovations in basic science education
  • Serve on the Medical School Admissions Committee by screening medical school applications for admissions and participating in multiple mini-interview sessions (MMIs)

Qualifications: PhD, MD, or equivalent advanced degree.  Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a postdoctoral fellowship, have relevant teaching experience, and are passionate about advancing health professions education. The successful candidate will have a degree in Physiology, Anatomy, Neuroscience, Developmental Biology, Pharmacology, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will demonstrate mastery of the requisite knowledge to teach the physiology of multiple organ systems, including pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, and gastrointestinal physiology, and neurophysiology.
