The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) in Syracuse, NY invites applications for an academic-year (10 month) tenure-track position as Assistant/Associate Professor of Environmental Biochemistry located in the Department of Chemistry. We are especially interested in candidates with research interests in biochemistry that complement efforts at the college in fields such as the biochemistry of harmful algal blooms, emerging contaminants, degradation of environmental pollutants and biochemical processes important in maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems. The candidate is expected to contribute to the broader research enterprise on campus and help expand the departmental undergraduate and graduate programs in biochemistry and the allied fields of environmental chemistry, natural products chemistry, renewable materials/biopolymer chemistry, or environmental health. Teaching responsibilities include general biochemistry, biochemistry lab, and a specialty graduate level course. The successful candidate will build an internationally recognized and extramurally funded research program. A strong interest in collaborative research with other faculty in Chemistry and in other departments is expected within the broader mission of the College to advance knowledge and promote stewardship of both natural and designed environments.

This position is available for consideration as Assistant/Associate Professor of Empire Innovation under the SUNY Empire Innovation Program (EIP). The EIP supports the recruitment and retention of faculty with strong track records of research accomplishments. More information about the EIP is available at: https://www.suny.edu/eip/.

This position is anticipated to start in Fall 2023.

Applications should indicate the level (Assistant/Associate) to which the candidate is applying.

Responsibilities: The workload for this position is 40% teaching, 50% research, and 10% service. Specific teaching responsibilities include a general undergraduate level course in biochemistry, one semester of biochemistry laboratory, and specialty graduate level biochemistry courses. Service responsibilities include advising undergraduate students in the Department of Chemistry, mentoring graduate students at the Master and Doctoral levels, and participating in departmental, college, and community services.

Required Qualifications: • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a closely related field. • Candidates must place a high value on both research and teaching. • Evidence of potential to secure external funding to support research commensurate with the level to which they are applying • Must have academic experience in Biochemistry commensurate with the level to which they are applying.

Preferred Qualifications: • One or more years of postdoctoral experience and a proven track record in either biochemical or chemical research • Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring within the broader field of biochemistry • Evidence of collegiality and dedication to professional service • Evidence of ability to communicate science effectively to multiple constituencies. • Evidence of experience fostering an inclusive environment, working with people from diverse backgrounds, and incorporating diverse perspectives in research

The College and the Faculty: The successful candidate will join the Department of Chemistry (https://www.esf.edu/chemistry/). The Chemistry Department offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, with specializations in environmental chemistry, biochemistry, natural products chemistry, and polymer chemistry. The department currently has 13 faculty members distributed among these sub-areas and enrolls about 60 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students. Undergraduate research is actively encouraged within the Department. ESF is a specialized PhD-granting college within the 64-campus SUNY system and is a Carnegie R2 “High Research Activity” Institution that consistently earns high rankings in US News and World Report, Forbes, Princeton Review, and other national college guidebooks. SUNY-ESF is dedicated to solving environmental problems through research, teaching, and service. With a total enrollment of 1,700 undergraduates and 600 graduate students, SUNY-ESF provides an intimate small-college atmosphere with a low student/faculty ratio that allows for personal attention and assistance for students. ESF is one of nine Ph.D. granting institutions within the SUNY system. Integration of research and teaching is emphasized, and the college has a strong undergraduate research program where undergraduate students regularly work with graduate students and faculty. ESF has nine regional campuses/field stations and maintains nearly 25,000 acres of forest properties offering excellent opportunities for field-based research. Access to chemical instrumentation (http://www.esf.edu/ats/) on the campus is excellent. The ESF campus is adjacent to Syracuse University and close to SUNY Upstate Medical University. The Syracuse Veterans Administration Hospital, Upstate Medical University Hospital, Crouse Hospital and Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital are within walking distance from ESF and offer extensive research and collaborative opportunities for health-related projects. The University Hill community provides students and faculty with the resources of large institutions of higher education, including a wide array of courses, computer and library facilities, and sports and health services.

ESF has an especially strong focus in aquatic environmental sciences, with more than 50 faculty members on campus focused on environmental problems involving water. In the past decade ESF has made major investments in new laboratories e.g., the Center for Integrated Teaching and Research in Aquatic Sciences, the Forest Soils laboratory, and the mass spectrometry complex in A&TS which include two new Orbitrap mass spectrometers and several high sensitivity LC-MS/MS systems, as well as an 800 MHz NMR. These facilities bring outstanding capabilities to ESF, allowing for the recruitment of highly qualified new faculty members. Existing faculty members in Chemical Engineering and Environmental Resources Engineering are working on new technologies for remediation of water quality problems including harmful algal blooms and PFAS contamination. The Clarkson-ESF Center of Excellence in Healthy Waters located on campus will help interface those efforts with private enterprise. Located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes region, Syracuse is a small city in a rural region offering a diversity of natural and cultural amenities, a low cost of living, and a high quality of life, ranking among the top 10 percent of “Best Places to Live” in “The Places Rated Almanac.” Syracuse is situated with easy access to New York City, the Adirondack Park, the Great Lakes, and many other points of interest in the eastern United States and Canada.
