Job Description: Associate in Research

Organization: Duke University Position: Research Associate Location: Position location – USA; Durham, NC (With travel 2~ times/yr to South Asia) Reports to: Professor Erica Field; Duke University Start Date: October 1st, 2019 Length of Commitment: 12 months (renewable) Experience: Master’s Degree, depending on qualificatios Language Requirement: None (Bangla Preferred)

Responsibilities:

Research Associates (RAs) will work with Professor Field and co-PIs on applied micro-economic development research directed at informing public policy in low-income countries. RAs primary duties include data cleaning and management, as well as assisting Professor Field on statistical and econometric analysis on a variety of projects in South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. RAs also participate in the design and implementation of survey instruments used to collect data from field projects. In ensuring quality fieldwork, RAs will act as liaisons between the field team and the PIs.

RAs will be expected to assist with drafting initial results, reports for funders and other stakeholders, conference presentations, and research papers. RAs will occasionally help with composition of grant proposal preparation and other related documents. When needed, RAs will travel to the field to help launch and manage field projects, as well as to familiarize themselves with these projects.

RAs will be selected based on their demonstrated interest in development economics, which may include coursework, research projects, or past research assistant positions in this field. The RA ship typically lasts one year, during which the RAs will work alongside Professor Field and other coauthors in developing their own research interests and expertise in development economics. In sum, the RAs job can be divided into the following four categories of activities: (1) Data cleaning and management (30% time) (2) Statistical and Econometric analysis (40% time) (3) Research support, preparation of manuscripts and related documents (20% time) (4) Field work, management of field activities and operations (10% time)

Desired Qualifications and Experience Qualifying candidates will be graduates of well-regarded undergraduate or masters programs in economics and related fields, as well as: • Proficiency in programming with STATA • Strong quantitative and statistical skills • Significant coursework and experience in economics, statistics, public policy and international development. • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills • Prior research experience preferred • Graduate level coursework is a plus • Strong interest in international development policy and research • Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and a team player. • Proven ability to handle several different projects/tasks at one time, successfully complete tasks assigned, and meet deadlines. A willingness to work hard, be self-motivated and learn will be essential for doing well in this position. Experience in managing teams and interacting with institutional partners strongly desired. • Experience in conducting field research in developing countries with a background in randomized evaluations is a plus. • Willingness to travel internationally
