Instructor, Japanese (Job # 12888) Arizona State University School of International Letters and Cultures

The School of International Letters & Cultures at Arizona State University invites applications for the position of Instructor. The successful candidates will be expected to teach lower and/or upper division Japanese language courses at all levels (elementary through advanced level) and work closely with the program coordinator to prepare syllabi, lectures, class materials, and class assignments. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment made on an academic year basis (Aug. 16 – May 15). A typical full-time course load is four classes per academic semester. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, the needs of the university, and sufficient enrollment in assigned courses.

Required Qualifications: o MA in Japanese language pedagogy, applied linguistics, linguistics, or related field, by time of appointment. o Three years’ experience in higher education teaching Japanese language courses (elementary through advanced level), and evidence of effective teaching. o Native/near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English.

Desired Qualifications: o Demonstrated proficiency in online teaching and/or appropriate technologies in language instruction. o Experience participating in study abroad programs. o Experience with ACTFL proficiency standards and proficiency-based approaches to teaching Japanese.
