Can a machine learn to measure the universe? Join the Machine Intelligence Group at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), and help us find out!

We recently formed the Machine Intelligence Group (MIG) in the Scientific Computing Division (SCD) of Fermilab to accelerate science through the creative application and development of advanced algorithms, such as machine learning, deep learning and artificial intelligence. We are a collaboration- and community-oriented team that comprises a network of interdisciplinary researchers spanning many areas of cosmology, particle physics, statistics, and computing. We are developing an innovative program to bring machine intelligence and data-driven algorithms to challenges in physics. Our group will encourage and facilitate inter-institutional collaboration in the Chicagoland area.

We are hiring a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the areas of data science and machine intelligence to join our team. In this role, you would focus on the creative application of these algorithms to physics problems. Working at the interface between machine intelligence and science, we will be solving problems in physics, as well as developing solutions that make deep learning more useful for scientific applications. This role also includes opportunities to educate the laboratory community on the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence, and to develop tools and workflows for advanced computing architectures and for high-performance computing facilities.

The MIG prioritizes the career development of every team member. The postdoctoral researcher will be encouraged to design their research program towards publications and a portfolio of work that is aligned with future career goals and preferred field(s) of research and will be assigned a formal mentor in the division to support these efforts.

Position is for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension considered on a yearly basis thereafter.

The qualifications for this work include:

Demonstrated computational skills and familiarity with the formal aspects of machine learning Ph.D. in computer science and engineering, applied and computational mathematics, applied statistics, particle physics, astrophysics, or a relevant discipline by the time of the appointment A clear record of scientific accomplishments and publications, and other products of research Demonstrated oral and written communication skills. Beneficial, but not essential experience:

Experience with the application of machine learning to science problems Experience in high-performance computing (e.g., distributed GPU programming) The essential work activities include:
