Position Description:

Faculty Position Available Professor and Chair Computational Biology, Cornell University

Position: Full Professor and Chair, Tenure-track

Location: Ithaca, NY. The academic home for this position is the Department of Computational Biology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, housed on the Ithaca campus of Cornell University

The Department of Computational Biology seeks to recruit an engaging, energetic, and highly research-active individual for a professorial position and to serve as Department Chair, initially for a five-year term. We are seeking applicants for a 9-month, full-time tenure-track position at the full professor level. The department (https://compbio.cornell.edu/about/computational-biology/) is slated to grow and will occupy a new building in January 2025. The three primary research foci of the department are currently computational genomics (including population and evolutionary genomics), computational ecology, and computational neuroscience. Candidates may use a wide range of computational techniques to understand these diverse aspects of living systems. Individuals are expected to maintain a vigorous, externally funded, internationally recognized research program and to excel in undergraduate and graduate teaching programs.

Responsibilities: This position has an effort split of 60% Research, 20% Teaching, and 20% Administration.

Research (60%) – The successful candidate will develop an externally funded research program that applies advanced computational methods to better understand living systems. Biological problems that would be most at home in the department include genomics, evolutionary genomics, ecology, and neuroscience, but we also welcome applicants working on problems in other areas of biology, provided they have a strong computational component. Methods development is particularly valued. We also encourage candidates involved in translational research that pertains to human health and disease to apply.

Teaching (20%) - There is no formal teaching assignment with this position, although there is an expectation that the successful candidate will contribute to the teaching mission of the department.

Administration (20%) – This includes time for supporting junior faculty, writing annual departmental and faculty progress reviews, faculty recruitment, and participating in meetings with Deans and other department chairs. Computational Biology is a small department, so the load is not onerous.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in computational biology, computer science, genetics/genomics, quantitative ecology, neuroscience, physics, or a related field is required, with a primary interest in understanding living systems through the development and use of computational, statistical, and/or machine learning methods. The ideal candidate will have expertise and demonstrated leadership in the field of computational biology, with experience at the full professor level.

Diversity and Inclusion: Cornell University embraces diversity and inclusion. We seek candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We will consider candidates with nonconventional career trajectories, and we strongly encourage individuals from under-represented and/or marginalized identities to apply. For more information, see https://facultydevelopment.cornell.edu/statement-of-contribution-to-diversity-equity-and-inclusion-for-faculty-applicants/

Applications and Starting Date: Anticipated starting date is July 1, 2025 or as negotiated. Qualified applicants should submit 1) a cover letter briefly summarizing their background, qualifications, and interest in the position, 2) a Curriculum Vitae, 3) a research statement outlining experience, interests, and goals, 4) a teaching statement outlining experience, interests, and goals, 5) a statement supporting diverse communities (this can be a stand-alone document (preferred) or the information can be embedded in other parts of the application materials) outlining how, through research, teaching, service. mentoring, extension, and/or outreach, the candidate has contributed and will contribute to supporting Cornell’s historical mission of “any person … any study,” 6) copies of four relevant publications, and 7) names and contact information for three references, that will only be used with permission from finalists. Materials should be submitted online to: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/28311.

Applications received by December 1, 2024 will be given full consideration. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
