Job Title: Associate in Research Length of Commitment: 3 months Language Requirement: English, Russian Occupational Summary: The Associate in Research will work with Professor Charles Becker on research projects related to (a) impact of electrification on school attendance in Tajikistan, using satellite data, (b) tracking patterns of Soviet mortality caused by collectivization and the Stalinist Great Terror.

The primary duties include (a) geocoding satellite data at the pixel and higher levels, (b) running econometric models, (c) scanning in census data and converting it to computer-usable form, (d) scanning in NKVD arrest record data and converting it to computer-usable form, including geo-coding these data; (e) supervising undergraduate and beginning master’s research assistants

Work Performed: at Duke University (access to computers and ArcGIS software, as well as print materials to be scanned make on-site location mandatory).

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Qualifying candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree, but we are will be looking for graduates of well-regarded master’s programs in economics and computer science, as well as having good skills with ArcGIS and satellite data manipulation, intercalibration, and analysis.
