Position Description

Occupational Summary:

This is a temporary part-time position with hours worked determined on an as-needed basis, and with an end date of December 31, 2026. This position reports to the Director of the Shared Materials Instrumentation Facility (SMIF) and works under the guidance of the Executive Director of SMIF.

The person in this position will assist the SMIF Director on an as-needed/requested basis in the execution of scientific and research strategies, collaborations, and operations for SMIF.

The person in this position provides expertise in the science and technology of instrumentation and experimental methodologies found in SMIF, and in the building facility and safety systems utilized by SMIF. The person in this position will assist the SMIF Director and SMIF staff on an as-needed/requested basis in methods development, training, and operations of these instruments and systems.

The person in this position provides expertise and experience related to the educational mission of SMIF and will provide assistance as needed/requested.

Work Performed: o Provide input and assistance to the SMIF Director and Executive Director in o Managing the operational aspects of SMIF’s business units o Developing budgets and operational policies for each of SMIF’s business units o Provide assistance and training to SMIF staff for the operation and methods development of the X-Ray Photospectrometer (XPS), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), and Raman spectrometer. o Provide input and assistance to the Safety Officer for SMIF to manage and implement the safety policies and practices of SMIF, specifically assisting in the implementation of a new Toxic Gas Monitoring system for SMIF. o Serve as a committee member for prelim examinations or thesis defense for students that completed the ME711/ECE721 Materials Laboratory Course prior to 2026. Experience Professional work experience of at least 10 years, including management of a research laboratory and a team of scientific users. Experience with administrative duties associated with multi-user facility.

Education/Training Work requires scientific, technical, and administrative experience acquired through the completion of a PhD in materials science, engineering, chemistry, biology, or physics.
