The Data Science Institute (DSI) and the Physics & Astronomy Department of Vanderbilt University invite applications for the inaugural AI for New Messengers Postdoctoral Fellowship, with a targeted start date of 2023. This fellowship is focused on interfacing multi-messenger astrophysics with machine learning and artificial intelligence. Fellows will have the opportunity to develop greater expertise by taking classes and workshops at DSI.

The successful candidate will work in collaboration with the groups of Jesse Spencer-Smith and Karan Jani starting in 2023.

Vanderbilt is part of major multi-messenger collaborations such as LIGO Scientific Collaboration, LISA, NANOGrav, the International Pulsar Timing Array, SDSS, and LSST. Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with interdisciplinary research centers such as at Deep Learning Initiative, Vanderbilt Initiative for Gravity, Waves, & Fluids (VandyGRAF), Vanderbilt Initiative in Data-Intensive Astrophysics (VIDA), and Vanderbilt Lunar Labs Initiative.

The university houses the state-of-the-art Advanced Computing Center for Research and Education (ACCRE) cluster with ~10,000 cores and bleeding-edge GPU resources. Fellows will have access to computing infrastructure including two DGX A100s for model fitting and inference.

Fellowships will be renewable for up to three years, with an attractive salary including full benefits, relocation expenses, and a competitive research budget. Additionally, Vanderbilt will cover any expenses related to filing work visas for international scholars.

Eligibility Candidates should have a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, astrophysics or computer science, or similar before they begin their tenure as AIM fellows. Candidates should demonstrate interdisciplinary research in multi-messenger astrophysics.
