Position Description:

The newly formed research group in Theoretical and Scientific Data Science at the International School for Advanced Study (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy, is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in Machine learning methods in physics of the universe (2 years full time, +1 year conditional on funding).

The successful applicant will join the AstroML group of Prof. Roberto Trotta, whose research interests include (but are not limited to) development of machine learning methods and Bayesian analysis algorithms, and their application to a variety of datasets from cosmology, astronomy and astrophysics; interpretable machine learning, inference with Bayesian graph networks, variational inference and simulation-based inference and uncertainty quantification in machine learning. The position has a generous computing, research and travel allowance, no teaching duties and an expected starting date of January 2022 (negotiable).

We are looking for qualified candidates from a broad variety of backgrounds, including cosmology, theoretical or astroparticle physics, statistics and computer science, with existing expertise in data analysis of cosmological, astrophysical or astronomical data sets; experience in developing and applying machine learning techniques, advanced Bayesian methods and deep learning to cosmological or astrophysical datasets, or to data in other fields.

SISSA is an institute with exclusive focus on research and PhD education in Physics, Mathematics and Neurosciences, located in the beautiful seaside city of Trieste, in the North-Eastern tip of Italy, enjoying excellent quality of life and great outdoors. We have strong collaborative links with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the University of Trieste and many other national and international institutions, as well as knowledge transfer opportunities with industrial and business partners.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity at all levels in the group.  All qualified applicants will receive consideration and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, or national or ethnic origin.
