Position Description:

*** this position has been closed and new applications are no longer accepted. ***

The Physics Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) has an opening for a Divisional Fellow position in the area of Theoretical Particle Physics, broadly defined. The Divisional Fellow position is an approximate equivalent to a tenure track junior faculty position.

The Physics Division invites applications from candidates with a record of accomplishment, creative ability, and outstanding promise in the field of theoretical particle physics or theoretical cosmology. The appointment will be as a career-track position of up to five years with the expectation of promotion to a career position as a Senior Scientist. Exceptionally qualified scientists can be considered for appointment directly to Senior Scientist.

A successful candidate should have an outstanding and broad program in theoretical research with a focus on problems of relevance to particle physics. The candidate is expected to interact with both the theoretical and experimental communities at Berkeley and beyond and have a commitment to encouraging equity and inclusion. Additional criteria in the search are potential for leadership in the field, ability to mentor junior scientists, and service in the scientific community. Candidates should have research experience beyond PhD, or equivalent, and have demonstrated independence and original achievements in research.

The Berkeley theory group consists of LBNL and UC Berkeley theorists, operating together as part of the Berkeley Center for Theoretical Physics (BCTP), which encompasses diverse aspects of theoretical particle physics, such as precision calculations, physics of and beyond the standard model, particle astrophysics, quantum information and formal theory. These positions also provide an opportunity to interact with experimentalists at LBNL and on UC Berkeley campus working on a broad program, including but not limited to collider physics (ATLAS), direct dark matter searches (LZ, SuperCDMS, light dark matter), neutrinos and rare decays (DUNE, neutrinoless double beta decay, Mu2e), quantum computing and sensors, and cosmology (SNe surveys, DESI, and CMB experiments). More information about the Berkeley theory group can be found at https://www-theory.lbl.gov/.
