Description:

The Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) and the Department of History at The Ohio State University invite applications for a position in the history of Black migrations. The Department seeks a scholar at the rank of assistant or associate professor whose research expertise examines 20th-century Black Migrations. We encourage applications from candidates with a wide range of approaches to this topic, including approaches that center the perspective of migrant communities and cultures, global history, Black/Africana Studies, African history, North American history, gender and sexuality studies, economic history, or histories of race or religion. The ideal candidate will be expected to teach at all levels of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. An ability to integrate community work with African diaspora communities in central Ohio in teaching and research practices is desirable. Qualifications: Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in Africana/Black Studies, History, or a related field by August 15, 2023. ABDs welcome to apply. All applicants should have experience or interest in teaching courses in the department’s graduate and undergraduate Africana curriculum and, if appropriate, design new courses.

About the Department of African American and African Studies: Our comprehensive multidisciplinary curriculum includes courses in literature, music, history, psychology, sociology, political science, and community development. AAAS has a Community Extension Center, which serves as our outreach arm into the local Black community in the city of Columbus and is a significant resource for faculty and student research and community engagement. The department is home to the journals Research in African Literatures and Spectrum: A Journal on Black Men. About the Department of History: One of the largest departments within the Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University, the History Department offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees. As a top-tier department at an eminent public university, it strives to provide comprehensive and challenging understandings of the complexity of the human past to audiences across the state, the nation, and the world at large. The field of African history is well represented among faculty and graduate students. The Department is home to the Harvey Goldberg Center for Excellence in Teaching, the Center for Historical Research and the on-line magazine Origins: Current Events in Historical Perspective.
