Position Description
Provides leadership and coordination for creation, management, and maintenance of archival and digital collections metadata in the Rubenstein Library. Collaborates with stakeholders to develop and implement processing, preservation, and description guidelines for reformatted and born digital collections, including the representation and discovery of such materials across various Duke Libraries’ platforms. Prioritizes development and implementation of inclusive metadata and description projects and policies in support of RL’s Guiding Principles of Description.

Responsibilities
Management of Library Metadata and Description – 45%
• Develops and supports workflows relating to production and publication of archival collection guides, archival catalog records, digital object records, and other descriptive tools which promote discoverability and access to Rubenstein Library materials.
• Provides expertise on and departmental support for ArchivesSpace, the Rubenstein Library’s archival collection management system; administers its use for archival accessioning and descriptive workflows in RL Technical Services; serves as primary liaison with Duke Libraries’ Digital Strategies and Technology division to coordinate upgrades, back-ups, and local customizations.
• Develops, customizes, and maintains processes, tools, and scripts to manipulate, analyze, and transform library bibliographic and descriptive data. Collaborates with stakeholders to maintain and preserve Rubenstein Library collections metadata across the library’s core systems, including ArchivesSpace, Aleph, the Duke Digital Repository, and FOLIO.
• Explores, develops, and maintains collections workflow and reporting tools to support the internal communication and reporting needs of Rubenstein Library Technical Services.
Digital Collections Processing and Access – 40%
• Processes and describes archival collections and accessions with digital or electronic records according to departmental guidelines. Creates and updates finding aids and MARC archival catalog records according to DACS, RDA, and local inclusive description standards.
• Participates and provides guidance on the ingest, maintenance, and representation of Rubenstein Library digital objects and associated metadata within the Duke Digital Repository, the catalog, and in collection guides.
• Collaborates with the colleagues to develop and refine workflows and systems to support the description, preservation, and access to electronic special collections materials. Provides training and support to other RL staff working with digital objects.
• Serves on cross-departmental library teams and working groups as an RL Technical Services stakeholder and representative, working to facilitate handoffs and transformations of Rubenstein Library metadata for digital collections and other digital projects.
Professional Engagement – 5%
• Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.
• Conducts and contributes to departmental outreach when needed, such as reports, presentations, exhibits, and publications.
Other – 10%
• Works shifts in the RL reading room, as assigned, including occasional weekend shifts.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
• In partnership with RLTS colleagues, recruits and supervises interns, students, and volunteers.
Qualifications

Education:
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program, advanced degree in archival studies or an academic field related to Rubenstein collections, and/or relevant combination of education and experience.
Experience:
Required: Three or more years of experience working in a research library; experience with using ArchivesSpace; working knowledge of archival and library metadata standards (DACS, EAD, RDA, MARC); demonstrated experience with scripting languages (XSLT, Python, Ruby); experience with metadata manipulation tools such as MARCEdit and OpenRefine; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; flexibility and ability to adapt to change; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; demonstrated ability to manage complex technical projects.
Preferred: Experience with database management and SQL; experience processing and describing rare bibliographic or archival materials; experience with OCLC cataloging utilities and local integrated library systems such as Aleph; experience with digital curation and preservation tools, suites, or platforms (e.g. BitCurator, Archivematica); experience with digital repository platforms (e.g. Samvera, Hyrax, DSpace, Preservica); knowledge of regular expressions; experience working with web APIs and JSON data structures; knowledge of Linked Open Data initiatives; experience with Aeon or other circulation management systems; familiarity with FOLIO.
Working Conditions
• Occasionally moves library materials weighing up to and over 20 pounds.
• Frequently works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.
• Normal office environment.
• Occasional weekend shifts required.
• Occasional travel required.

Salary and Benefits
Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $60,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
