We seek a candidate at the rank of Associate Professor or Assistant Professor in experimental particle physics. The position is for five years, with the possibility of renewal or promotion to a tenured position(*) based on satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. Salary is comparable to those at other prestigious institutions, and the appointee will receive financial support for starting-up research. 

The post holder will work with Professor Daniela Bortoletto, a PI of QUP and a member of the ATLAS experiment, as her Deputy-PI(**). The successful candidate is expected to make outstanding contributions in a few or all of the following areas:
  • novel machine-learning techniques 
  • advanced state-of-the-art radiation hard detectors 
  • new methods to study single Higgs and di-Higgs final states 
  • innovative jet tagging algorithms. 
Research related to the ATLAS experiment will be done as a member of the KEK-ATLAS group and be in line with its activities(***). The position will be based at KEK with frequent travel to the University of Oxford and CERN. The successful candidate is also encouraged to collaborate with other scientists at QUP, KEK, and QUP satellite laboratories in UC Berkeley, Toyota Central R&D Labs., and ISAS JAXA to contribute to interdisciplinary research at QUP. 

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Physics or a related field and more than three years of working experience after receiving a Ph.D. with an outstanding record and international recognition in particle physics, sensor development, advanced data analysis, machine learning, or related fields. 

As a WPI research center, QUP is designed to establish an international environment where more than 30% of researchers are non-Japanese. English is the official language of QUP.  (**) The Deputy-PI system enables overseas PIs to work at the center even when they cannot travel due to the corona pandemic. Each overseas PI may hire a Deputy-PI at the associate or assistant professor level who will be stationed at KEK to maintain a close relationship between the QUP main campus at KEK and the overseas PI. 

 (***) The KEK-ATLAS group has a responsibility in the detector operation and its upgrades on Inner Tracker, Muon trigger chamber, and Trigger.
