Position Description

Position Summary:
The Theory of Quantum Matter Unit (TQM) is seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Scholar. Highly-qualified candidates may also be considered for a Staff Scientist position. 

The TQM Unit carries research in the broad area of condensed matter and statistical physics, making use of both numerical and analytic techniques. The Unit has a strong interest in frustrated magnetism, with an emphasis on quantum spin liquids and other unconventional phases of matter. Other themes represented in the group include the application machine learning to problems in statistical physics; algorithmic aspects of quantum computing; analogies between condensed-matter and high-energy physics, and the physics of water. Applications from strong candidates with complementary interests are welcome. The group also maintains strong links with experimental groups developing and studying new quantum materials. Responsibilities: 
Postdocs in the TQM Unit are expected to engage in creative, curiosity-driven research, and are encouraged to develop their own independent interests, as well as collaborating with existing group members. Staff scientists are expected to pursue their own research agenda with a high level of independence, while providing support to less-experienced Unit members. 

Qualifications: 
(Required) 
 PhD in Theoretical Physics or a related discipline 
(Preferred) 
To be eligible for appointment as a Staff Scientist, candidates should usually have completed between 3 and 10 years of previous postdoctoral research, and demonstrated excellence in their field. 

Starting Date: 
Open to negotiation, but preferably between April 1st 2023 and October 1st 2023. 

Term & Working hours:
Full-time. Postdoctoral positions will normally be held for a period of three years, with the initial appointment being for one year, and renewal for a further 2 years based on performance and mutual agreement. Staff Scientist positions may be held for a up to five years, with the initial appointment being for one year, and subsequent renewal based on performance and mutual agreement.
