The Department
of Physics in Boston University’s College of Arts & Sciences invites
applications for a salaried, full-time teaching position at the rank of Lecturer
with a secondary teaching responsibility in the CAS Core Natural Sciences
Curriculum, with a start date of July 1, 2023. This is a full-time teaching
faculty position and is a non-tenure track appointment. The yearly course load
is three in Physics and one in Core.
The
Department of Physics supports vibrant education and research programs across
major areas of physics, as well as in interdisciplinary areas at the interfaces
with biology, chemistry, computer science, and engineering. Physics Department duties
for this position involve teaching three courses per year that include
introduction to physics courses for non-physics STEM majors and/or in science-focused courses that satisfy general education
requirements for non-STEM majors (e.g., the Physics of Food and Cooking; Cinema
Physica: Physics through Cinema).
The CAS
Core Curriculum offers an integrated curriculum that includes courses in the
natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. As a learning community, Core
Curriculum believes that the cultural and social diversity of its faculty,
staff, and students is vitally important to its distinction and excellence. Successful
applicants will demonstrate a broad knowledge of the natural sciences as well
as an interest in developing inclusive pedagogies that encourage students from
all disciplines to engage with the sciences. In Core, duties include working
collaboratively with other faculty on one interdisciplinary team-taught course
each spring leading weekly
discussion sections, delivering lectures on your area of specialty, and helping
to develop new curricula. The interdisciplinary course is aimed at the first
and second-year level for non-science majors and it considers the role of
science in the modern world, how we know what we know, and the nature of
truth in a 21st century context.
The
initial appointment is for two years, with possibility of renewal.
We seek applicants with a strong science
background and experience and proven track-record in teaching at the college
level, and an ability to work well in a collaborative environment. The candidate should (a) have experience in both traditional
teaching and experiential and
active learning approaches; and (b) should be committed to stimulating broad
interest in the sciences for diverse cohorts of students from all disciplines. They should also be interested in developing outreach efforts into
local schools, particularly those serving under-resourced students, aimed at
enhancing the diversity and strength of the STEM pipeline.
This is a
nine-month faculty position with salary payments spread over twelve months. We
also provide support for conferences that encourage pedagogical development.
Please
send your cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of your teaching
interests and qualifications, and arrange for at least three letters of
reference to be sent via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/23870. Application deadline for all materials is February 15,
2023. Questions about the position may be addressed to Robyn Kinch
