The Sociology Department, within Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, at Chapman University invites applications for an Instructional Assistant Professor (non-tenure-track) of Sociology with a primary area of expertise in medical sociology or sociology of health and illness. Preferred secondary areas include research methods, social theory, inequality/stratification, quantitative methodology, or deviant behavior. The position begins in August 2023. The ideal candidate will have evidence of demonstrated excellence in teaching (especially in lower- and upper-level courses related to this position), and a record of commitment to contributing to equity and inclusion.

The Sociology Department seeks an Instructional Assistant Professor of Sociology. The department is interested in sociologists with a record of effective and innovative teaching in the areas of Medical Sociology/ or Sociology of Health and Illness, that includes quantitative approaches when studying health-related social phenomena. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching courses for the Sociology major (which may also serve other majors, such as Health Sciences), which could include (but are not limited to) Medical Sociology, Introduction to Sociology, and classes related to the candidate’s secondary area of expertise.

Requirements include a Ph.D. in Sociology, or a related field, from an accredited University and a commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity as well as a student-centered learning environment.

The successful candidate will teach lower- and upper-level courses such as (but not limited to) SOC 385-Medical Sociology and SOC 101-Introduction to Sociology. Additional teaching opportunities include existing lower-division courses in the Sociology curriculum as well as the possibility to develop general education courses and electives in the candidate’s area of expertise.

The successful candidate will be an active participant in the department’s activities, including attending department meetings, advising students, and participating in department/college/university events/programs.

Non-tenure track faculty members are evaluated on their teaching and service.

This position is subject to final budget review. Chapman University offers a competitive benefits package and a relocation expense reimbursement package. Successful completion of a background check is required for the final candidate. The salary range for this Instructional Assistant Professor position is $72,000-$76,000.
