Working in a changing and complex environment, the E-Access Librarian will collaborate with divisions across the DUL system to engage with and sustain activities and projects that underpin stable e-resource access, authentication, authorization, and supporting workflows. They will use expert knowledge of e-resource licensing, access models, and considerations for patron privacy to create and maintain intuitive, accurate, and stable access to extensive online collections across library access and discovery systems to maximize cross-system functionality and optimize all aspects of the discovery of and access to electronic resources. The E-Access Librarian will oversee and facilitate access for a wide variety of e-resources using EZproxy, Single-Sign-On (SSO), and other tools and mechanisms in collaboration with colleagues in Collections Services, Digital Strategies & Technologies, and the Duke Office of Information Technology divisions as needed.

Responsibilities

·       Oversees and supports electronic resource access and discovery, with an emphasis on authentication and authorization at DUL; interacts with publishers, vendors, and other service providers to ensure consistent access to library holdings across multiple platforms, including

o   Managing updates to various EZproxy servers, including DUL, DKU, and Alumni Resources 

o   Managing e-resource access projects that necessitate atypical workflows

o   Ensuring DUL IP ranges and branding are up to date with content providers and working with Duke IT Security Office to investigate unauthorized access reported by content providers

o   Managing access to Duke Alumni Library Resources Portal

·       Designs and leads regular training for troubleshooters and frontline staff to address emergent problems and ongoing needs related to common e-resource issues or complex workflows, authentication, authorization, and patron privacy considerations

·       Develops training and documentation to support and facilitate SSO implementation with select content providers to enable nuanced authorized access across Duke user groups

·       Gathers and analyzes data from core e-resource access systems and collaborating with key partners across the library in order to continuously improve access and proactively determine access issues reflected in discrepant usage

·       Serves on relevant library and consortia committees as it relates to functional expertise and/or professional development, including participating in the development and implementation of the FOLIO Library Services Platform.

·       Point person for troubleshooting electronic resource tickets submitted through the AskTech ticketing system requiring authentication and authorization or identity management support, and also serves as alternate departmental triager for electronic resource tickets submitted through the AskTech ticketing system.

·       Displays continuing growth in professional and subject knowledge and takes an active interest in the profession. Growth and interest should be demonstrated through continuing development of professional knowledge and abilities, membership and participation in professional organizations, and service to the library, University, or community in a professional capacity.

·       Plays an active role in other e-resource related projects and initiatives as assigned

·       Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

·       May supervise and recruit interns or student assistants as needed

Qualifications

Education:

Required: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the conceptual, analytical, and interpersonal skills required to manage and lead a critical library program.

Experience:

Required:

·       At least one year of demonstrated, successful experience supporting electronic resources access in an academic research library environment or equivalent

·       Conceptual and practical knowledge of current technologies, tools, and practices used by academic libraries for authorization and authentication of e-resources, related standards, and the relationships among them, including IP authentication, EZproxy, Single-Sign-On, COUNTER, SUSHI, OpenURL

·       Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including evidence of ability to work collaboratively within and across organization; ability to communicate professionally, promptly, and consistently with a broad range of internal and external audiences; ability to tailor communications to the circumstances and audience

·       Demonstrated analytical, organizational, time, and project management skills, including the ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders, collate and synthesize information from varying sources to facilitate workflow management, set priorities, and effectively manage multiple projects and assignments

·       Initiative, flexibility, and ability to work creatively and effectively both independently and as a team member

·       Interest in professional development and engagement and promise of an extended range of professional activity in the future

Preferred:

·       A successful candidate will be forward-looking, collaborative, stay abreast of emerging tools and best practices related to e-resource access, discovery, user privacy, authentication, and authorization, with a collaborative approach and focus on customer support.

·       Experience working with Ex Libris 360 Core, Summon, Aleph

·       Awareness of the relationship between electronic resources management and other library services, such as cataloging/metadata, library discovery systems, and/or acquisition of library resources; ability to troubleshoot e-resource access issues and recognize familiar patterns and also identify exceptions to the pattern

·       Demonstrated proficiency in data gathering, including usage statistics, and analysis techniques to support assessment activities and statistical analysis

Working Conditions

·       Occasionally works in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible

·       Normal office environment

·       Occasional travel required

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank dependent on qualifications and experience; the anticipated range is $55,000-$67,000. Comprehensive benefits package includes 20 days vacation, 14 holidays, 12 days sick leave; health, dental, disability and life insurance and support for professional development and training.
