The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences invites applications for multiple non-tenure-track Associate Professor of the Practice and/or Clinical Assistant Professor beginning as soon as July 1, 2023. Qualifications required of all applicants include experience commensurate with a PhD degree or equivalent in any of the disciplines that span computing and data sciences and a strong commitment to teaching and to curricular development that is informed by real-world experience in an academic or industrial setting.

Founded in 2019 and housed in the top five floors of an iconic 19-story building the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) at Boston University (BU) is a university-wide, degree-granting academic unit that augments and complements the traditional cognate disciplines of computer science, computer engineering, and statistics by laying the foundation for innovation-driven, civic-minded computing to maximize the real-world impact of its research, curricular, and co-curricular programs. Supporting its undergraduate and graduate degree programs, CDS has 43 faculty members who pursue research at the nexus of data science and the landscape of disciplines at BU. Additional information about the computing landscape at BU is available at: https://www.bu.edu/cds-faculty/explore/.

Depending on qualifications and experience, the successful candidate will be appointed as either a clinical assistant professor or an associate professor of the practice in CDS, carrying a teaching load of five courses per year at the undergraduate or master's level, covering foundational, core, or elective computing and data science subjects. This teaching load may be reduced by up to two courses for candidates who are interested and have requisite experience to take on software development or data engineering work in CDS, including support of educational and/or sponsored research projects.

Qualified candidates are invited to submit their applications through the the web portal available at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/24695. Application materials include current curriculum vitae, a statement summarizing teaching and pedagogical innovation interests, an optional statement highlighting relevant applied or translational research experience in industry, and at least three letters of references. Applications are welcome from recent PhD graduates, postdocs, lecturers, or practitioners who are interested in an academic career focusing on teaching and mentorship of undergraduate students. Particular attention will be given to candidates with a record of pedagogical innovation in topics that are relevant to data science, most notably mathematical and algorithmic foundation, software and data engineering, data mining, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence. Candidates from underrepresented groups and those who have a track record of broadening participation in computing and data science are encouraged to apply.

Boston University expects excellence in teaching and in research and is committed to building a diverse community, which is essential to its mission as expressed at https://www.bu.edu/info/about/diversity. We are a VEVRAA Federal Contractor.

BU conducts a background check on all final candidates for certain faculty and staff positions. The background check includes contacting the final candidate’s current and previous employer(s) to ask whether, in the last seven years, there has been a substantiated finding of misconduct violating that employer’s applicable sexual misconduct policies. To implement this process, the University requires a final candidate to complete and sign the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” after execution of an offer letter.
