The Department of Classical and Early Mediterranean Studies at Brandeis University invites
applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in ancient
Greek history from a broad, comparative Mediterranean perspective. This position is subject to
budgetary approval. The successful candidate will teach survey courses and special topics in
Greek history and the early Mediterranean world. An ability to teach Greek language and
literature is desired, but not required. Research specialization is open, but preference will be
given to candidates whose interests complement, but do not duplicate, those of the department
faculty, and who demonstrate a commitment to interdisciplinary and inclusive teaching and
scholarship.
The Department of Classical and Early Mediterranean Studies instructs undergraduates and
administers the Ancient Greek and Roman Studies MA program. A well-rounded candidate
will advise undergraduate majors at all levels of their studies, mentor seniors on independent
projects covering various topics, and serve as an advisor and mentor to graduate students
working on MA papers or theses. Our full-time teaching load is 4 courses per year (2 courses
per semester). A Ph.D. in Ancient History, Classics, Classical Studies, Greek, or related fields is
required.

short list of candidates is compiled for Zoom interviews to be held in mid-November 2023.
