Position Description:    

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a Lab Manager for a new superconducting quantum device foundry, the Detector Microfabrication Facility (DMF), a new 5,500 sq. ft. class-100 cleanroom with a toolset dedicated to fabrication and metrology of superconducting materials and devices. The DMF is supported in part by the Q-NEXT National Quantum Information Science (QIS) Research Center, and its mission is to supply state-of-the-art superconducting devices to both the Center and the broader QIS community. The focus of the Lab Manager position will be initially to assist with the build-out and commissioning of DMF, including assistance in tool acceptance and installation, and establishment of safety protocols for tool start-up, commissioning and operations. During this phase, the lab manager will report to the DMF construction project organization. Completion of the DMF cleanroom is expected in 2024, after which the Lab Manager focus will turn to facility operations, with responsibilities including safety and training protocols, facility and tool maintenance programs, and hazardous material handling. Once operations commence, the lab manager will report under the DMF operations organization.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Manage day-to-day cleanroom operations.
  • Participate in tool acceptance activities, develop procedures for installation and commissioning, and establish tool safety protocols for operations.
  • Maintain cleanroom hazardous materials catalogs and documentation, and establish protocols for safe handling of materials and waste; maintain stock of common cleanroom supplies and consumables.
  • Serve as DMF Area Manager and point of contact with the building manager, and provide timely communications to the DMF Operations team about any facility issues or alerts.
  • Work with Environment, Safety & Health to develop safety training courses, both cleanroom and tool-specific; work with Facilities & Operations on the development and execution of regular cleanroom maintenance of F&O-managed systems and utilities.
  • Maintain DMF sub-systems (e.g., ultra-pure water, process vacuum, utility nitrogen, acid waste neutralization) coordinating preventative maintenance schedules and servicing with system suppliers.
  • Oversee all cleanroom and tool maintenance and coordinate any necessary service contracts.
  • Report regularly to the DMF construction project and/or operations organization on the status of the cleanroom and toolset.
To be successful in this position you will bring:
  • An associate degree in science or engineering with minimum five years of relevant experience in device fabrication, systems engineering, process improvement, and quality control strategies, combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in the operation, maintenance, and modification of cleanroom process tools, vacuum system hardware, and supporting systems.
  • Management experience in a cleanroom and fabrication environment.
  • Effective communication and writing skills to prepare and present technical and scientific documentation.
  • Demonstrated record of scientific productivity through publications
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research and be able to collaborate in a team environment.
