The Duke Music Department is looking to fill an Associate in Research position to assist with the Duke University Wind Symphony starting Fall 2023. 

 The Duke University Wind Symphony (DUWS), directed by Verena Mösenbichler-Bryant, is an ensemble of Duke undergraduate and graduate students, and community members who wish to challenge themselves musically while having fun playing and performing. The Wind Symphony performs two concerts each semester. In addition, the Wind Symphony performs as part of the annual Family Weekend concert in the fall and hosts the Viennese Ball each spring. 

 Responsibilities of the assistant to the director of the Duke Wind Symphony include: • Assist with recruitment emails leading up to the start of the semester • participate in the ensemble info meeting the weekend before classes start • participate in auditions during the first week of classes • assist with part assignments • communicate with the ensemble and be available for meetings if requested • attend weekly rehearsals (Tu/Thu 7:30pm-9:30pm in Baldwin Auditorium) • organize and run sectionals • conduct at least one piece for each performance • help with rehearsal and concert logistics • organize, recruit, rehearse, and conduct the commencement ensemble for the Duke Commencement Ceremony at Wallace Wade 

Preferred Qualifications • a minimum of two years of experience conducting/teaching wind ensembles/wind bands • a Bachelor in Music Education or conducting • stage presence and skills to effectively engage with musicians and the audiences during performances • knowledge of the wind ensemble repertoire • ability to manage rehearsal time efficiently • ability to work closely with the Director of the Duke Wind Symphony • ability to lead • demonstrated commitment to advancing issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and access in the arts.
