Position: Research Associate
Location: Ithaca, NY 14853. The academic home for this position is the Department of Communication in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), housed on the Ithaca campus of Cornell University.

The Department of Communication at Cornell University invites applications for a Research Associate position in the Citizens and Technology Lab (CAT Lab). This is a 12-month, full-time, 3-year appointment. The Research Associate will manage the overall portfolio of studies in the CAT Lab, in collaboration with the CAT Lab team. The Research Associate will lead individual research projects at the intersection of community goals and original research interests; represent CAT Lab externally in research, fundraising, and reporting; supervise undergraduate and graduate students and temporary workers, as needed; and engage in strategic policy development together with the faculty director and project manager. 

Responsibilities and Duties: 
  • (50%) Research: leading or co-leading our concurrent studies through the research pipeline, generating original research, and fundraising for this work as PI and Co-PI. Managing research-related organizational processes, including creating and maintaining CAT Lab's overall research processes; contributing information about the research process to funder reports; contributing to research aspects of strategic planning and fundraising, in collaboration with other PIs and the project manager; and representing CAT Lab’s research externally and internally.
  • (20%) Outreach and service: Managing relationships with online communities by developing new relationships, organizing events, and coordinating online conversations with communities on Reddit, Wikipedia, and other online networks; contributing to the broader scientific community through service, for example as peer review and editor of conference papers.
  • (10%) Mentoring: working with graduate and undergraduate students associated with CAT Lab, both internally to Cornell and in our larger field of collaborators.
  • (20%) Translational research and policy efforts: co-designing and representing policy and outreach efforts for CAT Lab’s research, in coordination with the project manager.
Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in the behavioral sciences or an adjacent discipline (communication, psychology, sociology, information science, political science, education, economics, etc.)
  • Expertise in participatory and/or qualitative approaches to research or other relevant experience in community organizing
  • Experience coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders or organizations
  • Familiarity with research in socio-technical contexts such as online platforms
  • Strong writing skills
  • Basic experience using statistical software for data analysis

CALS hiring range for this position is $49,100 to $76,500.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
