Position Description
The Department of Linguistics & Philosophy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA invites applications for a tenure track position in Linguistics at the Assistant Professor level, starting July 1, 2024 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. The appointment will be made in Semantics and/or Syntax, understood in a fairly broad sense. We equally encourage applicants whose work is focused primarily on semantic and/or syntactic theory and applicants whose work in semantics and/or syntax connects strongly with other areas of linguistics and/or adjacent fields. We also encourage a range of focuses and methodological approaches, including (but by no means limited to) fieldwork on underdocumented languages, experimental studies, computational modeling and focused theoretical work. Faculty duties include teaching 3 courses/year or equivalent, graduate and undergraduate (semester system), conducting research, and advising students. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field by the start of employment. Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, copies of research papers, evidence of teaching ability, and contact information for at least three referees. In addition, the application should include a statement outlining the applicant's research interests, previous achievements, and plans, as well as the broader questions that this research promises to engage with.
