Position Description

The Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability at Duke University seeks an experienced renewable energy project development professional for an Adjunct Instructor position.

The purpose of this position is to co-teach Duke’s graduate-level course, “A Practical Introduction to Solar Energy Project Development in the U.S.,” known informally as “Intro to Solar Project Development.” The course, offered during both fall and spring semesters, examines the complex process of developing, financing, and building non-residential solar energy projects, and introduces the major players involved. The Instructional Staff member will collaborate with the course instructor to design and deliver course content, leading up to half of class meetings. This course provides a foundation of knowledge and a set of tools useful for students interested in solar development, corporate sustainability or the energy industry at large. At the end of the class, students will be able to:

● Understand how public policy affects non-residential solar development, including key aspects of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and state level solar programs and goals ● Define various non-residential solar market segments including utility-scale, community solar, and commercial and industrial ● Define the role of developer, EPC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction) provider, lender, and tax equity investor, amongst others ● Apply the tools used in siting and infrastructure evaluation ● Describe the major steps in an interconnection process ● Describe key steps in real estate due diligence ● Describe the critical elements of legal contracts including Power Purchase Agreements, Interconnection Agreements, and EPC agreements ● Describe the commonly used project financing structures, and how solar system value is split amongst stakeholders ● Build a basic financial model to calculate project IRR

Applicants should possess sufficient climate and energy experience to be able to design and deliver a course that successfully guides graduate students and upper-level undergraduates to achievement of these learning objectives.

The successful candidates will be experienced with climate and energy with a master's degree, a doctorate in a field related to climate, energy or environmental studies, or equivalent professional experience; and will present with a demonstrated talent for mentoring student work in the relevant methods.
