Position Description
The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Division at Fermilab is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join their SQMS Qubit Fabrication Group. The research project focuses on leading-edge work in innovative fabrication and characterization of high coherence superconducting quantum devices. Improving the coherence times of 2D and 3D superconducting qubits requires the development of novel processing techniques to address lossy surfaces and interfaces currently limiting qubit performance. In this project, the successful candidate will be working in a Class 5 cleanroom at the University of Chicago to develop and optimize thin film deposition, dry/wet etching, substrate preparation, and lithography techniques to produce high quality qubits. These fabricated qubits will be tested at Fermilab as well as at other partner institutions to draw conclusions between processing technique and qubit performance. The successful candidate will be part of a highly collaborative team and actively engage with Fermilab's scientists, engineers, and external collaborators. An ideal background for the candidate would be in applied or experimental physics and/or engineering or a related field. Required Expertise: • PhD in Physics or in a relevant related field such as Engineering • PhD received within the last 3 years or in the upcoming year • Knowledge and understanding of cleanroom processing techniques. • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. • Ability to effectively work in large collaborations. • Ability to commute from/to Fermilab and University of Chicago facilities. Preferred Expertise: • Experience with cleanroom-based nano-fabrication methods to include electron beam and optical lithography, metal evaporation and standard lift off processes. • Experience in growth of various materials (superconducting metals, oxides, etc.) by magnetron sputtering, e-beam evaporation and atomic layer deposition as well as material etching. • Experience in materials characterization techniques such as time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning/transmission electron microscopy (STEM) Interested candidates should submit via Academic Jobs Online: https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/27142 • Curriculum Vitae with a list of selected publications • Cover letter • At least one reference letterApplication Materials Required:
