The Department of Anesthesiology at Duke University Medical Center seeks applications from physician leaders with training and experience in mentoring and in leadership for the position of Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs to oversee the full range of faculty development activities and academic career enhancement.

The Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs will report to the Department Chair and work closely with other Vice Chairs, Associate Vice-Chairs, and Division Chiefs in fostering an environment that values and promotes faculty development.

Education Requirements - Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree - Board Certified in Anesthesiology and participating in Maintenance of Certification - Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in any of the anesthesiology subspecialty areas preferred

Required Qualifications - Full-time, regular rank faculty member (minimum rank of Associate Professor of Anesthesiology) - Previous experience as a leader of, and at a minimum, as a participant in faculty (or leadership) development training - Demonstrated interest, commitment, and leadership with excellent communication skills - Demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce/academic environment - Passion for promoting the careers and well-being of faculty - Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of North Carolina

Duties and Responsibilities - Advance the Department’s leadership and faculty development initiatives: Leverage existing and develop new initiatives to provide resources for mentoring, leadership, team building, and professionalism among faculty. - Design and implement innovative programs tailored to the evolving needs of our faculty, ensuring a continuous path of professional growth and achievement. - Build effective mentor-mentee and peer-to-peer mentoring relationships. Support faculty individually regarding mentorship and career guidance. Oversee the existing early career faculty mentorship program, continue and enhance existing additional faculty development programs for early career development. - Work with the Associate Vice-Chair for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion to ensure alignment of goals with regard to equity in recruitment, bias training for faculty, and development of under-represented in medicine faculty. - Participate in Departmental Appointment, Promotion and Tenure (APT) committee, serve as a resource for faculty during the APT process, and advise faculty regarding readiness for promotion. In consultation with division chiefs, discuss career development and APT concerns for all department faculty prior to annual review with the Department Chair. - Champion an environment of professionalism, respect, and inclusivity. Promote faculty and staff wellness, engagement, recruitment, and retention. Foster a collegial environment where disagreements are resolved constructively and collaboratively. - Assess departmental culture through internal and institutional surveys. Promote departmental response to institutional culture survey requests to ensure maximal participation that can generate actionable data. - Address issues related to professional conduct and work with faculty to uphold the highest standards of ethical and professional behavior aligned with the Duke University Health System (DUHS) and the Duke University School of Medicine (DUSOM) policies and guidelines. Work with department leadership to manage professionalism concerns among faculty. - Develop and implement strategies for effective conflict management within the department. - Serve as liaison between the Anesthesiology Department and the School of Medicine Office of Faculty, Medical Center APT committee, Faculty Affairs Steering Team (FAST) committee in the office of the Vice Dean for Faculty, and the entities with Justice, Equity, Diversity, Antiracism and Inclusion (JEDAI) oversight in the DUSOM and DUHS.
