Position Description

Postdoctoral opportunity in structural materials research at CHESS

The Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron source (CHESS) seeks a postdoctoral researcher in the field of structural materials to join our scientific team. The position is funded as part of the Advanced Characterization of Metals under Extreme Environments (ACME2) center, an NNSA-funded collaboration between CHESS, Colorado School of Mines, University of California Santa Barbara, and researchers in the DOE/NNSA complex. The scientific mission of the ACME2 center is to advance the study of high-strain-rate deformation of metastable microstructures in metal alloys, with a focus on developing robust links between modelling and experiment. Work at CHESS, where this position is seated, will focus on characterization of complex material microstructures using high-energy x-ray techniques, experimental design and instrument development for in-situ high-strain-rate deformation measurements, and the interfacing of x-ray data with computational models and simulation.

Additionally, the successful candidate will:

+ Communicate results through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences

+ Work with diverse and interdisciplinary teams to achieve scientific and technical objectives

This is a yearly appointment, which can be renewed annually through September 2028, based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Requirements:

+ Ph.D. or equivalent in the physical sciences or engineering

+ Record of impactful scientific publications

+ Desire to work in a multidisciplinary research environment, interacting with researchers at all levels, including students and facility users

+ Proficiency in science communication, written and oral, formal and informal

Assets:

+ Prior experience in x-ray and/or neutron scattering at large user facilities

+ Prior experience with high performance computing and/or data-intensive research

+ Prior experience with microstructural characterization of metals, mechanical testing, and/or high-strain-rate deformation

+ Proficiency with scientific software (e.g. Python, C, SPEC, MATLAB, etc)

Compensation:

The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $75,000.

Additional information:

Due to the nature of this project and funding source, individuals on visas will not be eligible for hire into this position.

For further information about the position, please contact Dr. Kate Shanks (ksg52@cornell.edu).

The posting will remain open until the position is filled. Applications received before August 31, 2024 are guaranteed full consideration.

A complete application package will include a Cover Letter, CV, List of Publications, Statement of Research Interests, and (3) letters of recommendation.
