Position Description:
  URMs

Beginning Fall 2025, a Postdoctoral Scholar position is open in the Quantum Condensed Matter Theory group at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Our group is represented by Profs. Aris Alexandradinata, Onuttom Narayan, Sriram Shastry and Sergey Syzranov, with strengths in topological quantum and strongly correlated matter, disordered systems, and mesoscopic physics. The Scholar is expected to be fluent in one or more of these topics, and will be encouraged to interact with any member in our group.

Our group is interested in uncovering new paradigms in wave function geometry and topology, with a goal of harnessing wave function geometry for sustainable technologies (e.g., light harvesting). We are also broadly interested in the out-of-equilibrium many-body physics of driven topological matter, the coexistence of magnetism with superconductivity, novel transport behaviors in electron hydrodynamics and in high-temperature superconductors, and the competition between spin glasses and quantum spin liquids.

The Scholar is encouraged to collaborate with condensed-matter experimental groups led by Ryan Baumbach, David Lederman, Arthur Ramirez, Jairo Velasco and Aiming Yan, as well as other members of the Materials Science and Engineering program.

Santa Cruz is a picturesque town on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, with spring-like weather all year round, beautiful beaches, and redwood-forested mountains. The town is bike-friendly and within driving distance to Silicon Valley and several renowned Universities (Stanford, Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara), making UCSC ideal for collaborations with other Condensed Matter groups, and for having a constant stream of renowned seminar/colloquium speakers.

Interested candidates should submit an application through the Academic Jobs Online website. The required application documents are a CV, publication list, research statement (2-3 pages, with minimal jargon), a minimum of 3 reference letters (maximum of 5), and a cover letter that summarizes your qualifications and interest in the position. Applications will open on August 1, 2024. Applications submitted by December 1 2024 will receive full consideration; late applications may be considered if the position is not yet filled. The position is anticipated to begin in Fall 2025, but the starting date is negotiable. The salary will be competitive with comparable postdoctoral positions, and has a lower bound set by UC policy. The initial appointment will be 100% for one year; reappointment for up to three years is contingent on satisfactory performance; reappointment beyond three years is contingent on the availability of funds. Inquiries about the position may be sent to Prof. Aris Alexandradinata at aalexan6@ucsc.edu.
