Position Description

PreMiEr is a NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) focused on Precision Microbiome Engineering (https://premier-microbiome.org/). Headquartered at Duke University, PreMiEr brings together a team of interdisciplinary researchers from Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina A&T, UNC-Charlotte and North Carolina State Universities to develop diagnostic tools and engineering approaches that promote building designs for preventing the colonization of harmful bacteria, fungi, or viruses while encouraging beneficial microorganisms. Beyond its research footprint, PreMiEr also engages local, domestic and international stakeholders to develop the next generation of diverse, inclusive and responsible microbiome engineering leaders.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Research Scientist to join our dynamic team at PreMiEr. The successful candidate will conduct pioneering research in microbiome engineering, contributing to the Center’s mission to create an integrated framework that encourages the proliferation of beneficial microbes that protect against disease while simultaneously preventing the spread of pathogens. This role involves collaborating with a diverse group of engineers, biologists, computational scientists, and industry partners to develop novel technologies and methodologies for microbiome analysis and manipulation.

Key Responsibilities:

- Conduct independent and collaborative research in microbiome engineering, developing new methodologies and technologies. - Design and execute experiments to analyze, manipulate, and model microbiomes in various built environment contexts. - Utilize advanced molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and synthetic biology tools to understand and engineer microbiome functions. - Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across PreMiEr partner institutions, including other research scientists, faculty, and scholars. - Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables in alignment with PreMiEr's research goals. - Publish research findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences. - Contribute to writing grant proposals and reports to secure and maintain funding for ongoing and new research projects. - Mentor and train students, postdoctoral fellows, and other laboratory staff.

Qualifications:

Required:

- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. - Proven track record of scientific achievement as demonstrated by publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals. - Experience in microbiome research, molecular biology techniques, computational biology, or related fields. - Strong analytical skills and proficiency in using bioinformatics tools, statistical analysis, and software. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary, collaborative team environment. - Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred:

- Experience with high-throughput sequencing, metagenomics, metabolomics, or other 'omics' technologies. - Proficiency in synthetic biology techniques for microbiome engineering, such as CRISPR or gene editing. - Experience in computational modeling, machine learning, or data science applications in microbiome research. - Previous experience in grant writing and securing funding. - Demonstrated experience mentoring and training junior researchers or students.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter detailing their research experience and interests, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least three references. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
