Position Description:
   

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University, located in Houston, TX, seeks applications for one tenure-track assistant professor position in the area of Structural and Infrastructure Engineering with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. Outstanding candidates at higher ranks may also be considered.

We seek candidates with deep foundational expertise in civil, structural, or infrastructure engineering to envision and enable a future built environment that is resilient, adaptable, smart, just, and equitable. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  1. resilient and sustainable structures (e.g. civil, industrial, energy, space) including an emphasis on wind-, fire-, climate-, extreme environment, life-cycle, or nature-inspired engineering
  2. complex systems and the design of future intelligent infrastructure systems (e.g., power, water, gas, telecommunications) that are adaptable, controllable, and reconfigurable

The selected candidate will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses within their area of expertise; perform high-quality, high-impact research in their specialized field and present findings from research in peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and to community stakeholders; establish a strong research program supported by extramural funding; be involved in service to the university and the broader scientific community; and collaborate with faculty in diverse disciplines. The successful candidate will be required to have a strong commitment to teaching, advising, and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications

All candidates must have earned a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field conferred by July 1, 2025. All applicants should demonstrate excellence in scholarship, teaching, and collegial service.
