Position Description
The position (post-doc, research associate, or PhD student) is available within the research group FOR 5456 of the German Science Foundation (DFG). The overarching goal is the first implementation of satellite-based relativistic geodesy using optical atomic clocks and laser links between Earth and the international space station ISS. The concrete task is to optimize our strontium lattice clock (DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevA.98.053443), transfer it to the Geodetic Station Wettzell (Bavaria), reinstall and operate it there. In cooperation with the partners of the DFG research group, our clock will be compared with a strontium lattice clock at PTB Braunschweig. For this purpose, a ground-space-ground laser link Wettzell - ISS - Potsdam combined with a fibre link Potsdam - Braunschweig will be implemented. The latter is already operational. The comparison will be carried out during the ESA mission ACES, which will begin in 2025, after the launch of the space hardware in early 2025. This mission will operate a Cs cold atomic clock and optical and microwave transponders on the ISS. The work of the person filling the position includes: Extension and metrological characterization of our already built optical lattice clock “SOC2”, currently located at PTB Braunschweig, preparing and implementing transport to Wettzell, installation, optimisation, operation, enhancement, measurement campaigns during the ACES mission, data analysis. The scientist will also contribute to enhance the performance of and integrate into the lattice clock two new clock lasers currently under development. They will be based on room temperature and on cryogenic reference cavities. Work locations will be Braunschweig (2024 to early 2025) and Wettzell. Your profile: • Completed university studies (diploma/master's degree) • For the PD/res.associate position: doctorate with a grade "very good" or better • Highly motivated to carry out precision experiments and implement novel measurement methods • Strong initiative, effective working style • High level of creativity and drive to experiment intensely • Willingness to work in a team and in a research network • Computer programming experience • Knowledge in electronics • Experience in the field of optics and quantum optics is desirable We offer: • A truly unique research topic • For the post-doc/research associate position: salary level 100 % E13 • For the doctoral position: salary level up to 75% E13, depending on experience • For the group leader position: possibility to qualify for a habilitation in the subject "experimental physics"; you will receive extensive support for this. • Embedding in a DFG-funded consortium • International networking • Support from electronics engineers • Participation in conferences The duration of the post-doc position is 2 years, for the group leader up to 6 years, for the Ph.D. student 4 years.Application Materials Required:
