Position Description:

Job Summary: One faculty position in the University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering.

Applicants are expected to create, advance, and maintain a productive research program, and provide classroom and individual instruction for our diverse undergraduate and graduate degree-seeking students. In addition, candidates will support the department efforts to enhance and advance equity and inclusion in higher education through their teaching, research, and service activities, while contributing to the intellectual and academic life of the department. University and professional service will be expected as appropriate.

Responsibilities: This position is part of the Wisconsin Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (RISE)- Transforming Healthspan through Research, InnoVation, and Education (THRIVE) initiative, with the candidate's tenure home in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and will participate in interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with other departments, schools, and colleges. In the last century, we have made remarkable progress in extending human longevity. Increased life expectancy, however, is not uniformly associated with an equal increase in the proportion of life in good health. For many populations, longer life results in many years in poor health, functional dependence, reduced quality of life, loss of productivity, and increased human and economic costs. As a result, "health span" has emerged as an urgent area of inquiry. RISE-THRIVE aims to supercharge a fully integrated approach to advancing a healthy life span.

We seek candidates with research interests in industrial and systems engineering methodologies and tools that can significantly extend the health span of the population. We are specifically interested in candidates focused on the design or sociotechnical evaluation of human-centered assistive technologies, environments or devices to advance a healthy lifespan. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, (1) system modeling, analysis, and decision making for assistive living environments (2) assistive living environment simulation and study through extended reality, wearable devices, and other technologies, (3) scientific principles of human-technology interactions for assistive living environments and devices, or (4) collaborative robotic system design and evaluation for assistive living.

This position is complemented by another faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering focusing on technological advances in sensing, perception, and assistive living technology under the same initiative (ME PVL Link). The hire will complement the faculty within the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the new hire and the existing faculty in biomechanics, sensing, and robotics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and across the UW College of Engineering.
