Position Description:

We are searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher who is interested in exploring the application of machine learning and causal inference in the field of epidemiology. Working at the intersection of machine learning, causal inference, and epidemiology, the researcher will develop and implement machine learning algorithms for various problems in the field of epidemiology and healthcare. Some of the problems include:
  1. Causal structure discovery with machine learning / reinforcement learning
  2. Generative modeling based on causal structure
  3. Prediction of patient outcome
In recent years, many methods and approaches based on machine learning have been presented targeting various problems in the field of causal inference. Using such approaches, we are specifically interested in the application of such approaches to real-world data (such as COVID-19 patient data). The candidate will have a chance to work with other Ph.D. students and postdocs, and present their work at various conferences and in journals.

Our research collaboration brings together expertise from multiple interdisciplinary fields. It comprises researchers at the Departments of Mathematics and the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich, the Department of Physics and Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Prevention Institute at the University of Zurich.

The researcher will earn a yearly salary of roughly 100k CHF (gross). Zurich is an excellent and diverse city to live in and offers one of the best personal and professional environments globally. The city is well connected within Europe and provides easy connections to the beautiful Swiss Alps.

Qualifications
  1. A Ph.D. degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, biostatistics, or a related quantitative field
  2. Expertise and knowledge in machine learning required
  3. Experience in causal inference is desired (but not required)
Applicants will be evaluated based on the quality of their previous research and the strength of their reference letters.
