Description

Vanderbilt Divinity School seeks applications and nominations for a tenure-track faculty position in New Testament Studies. The appointment will be made at the rank of assistant professor. The ideal candidate would be a scholar who is prepared to teach a variety of approaches to New Testament and early Christianity.

The appointment requires teaching and advising in the degree programs offered by the Divinity School (M.Div., M.T.S., Th.M., and D.Min.), which prepare students for ministry and public leadership, and the Graduate Department of Religion (M.A., Ph.D.), which prepares students for teaching and research. One must have the ability and willingness to work in our masters-level concentration in Global Christianities and Interreligious Encounter. The successful candidate will arrive prepared to teach the introductory course in New Testament, required of divinity students, along with advanced courses in New Testament studies. The appointed faculty member will join the New Testament and Early Christianity Area of the Graduate Department of Religion. While the appointment is in the Divinity School, this position will actively partner with Vanderbilt’s Jewish Studies Program, the Department of Religious Studies, and other appropriate interdisciplinary colleagues throughout the university.

We especially welcome applications from underrepresented candidates. Vanderbilt Divinity School is strongly committed to social justice and values diversity among its faculty and students, as well as in research and teaching. The successful candidate will evidence commitment to the priorities described in the “Divinity Purposes and Commitments” statement (https://divinity.vanderbilt.edu/about/purposes.php).

Qualifications

Successful applicants will have completed either a Ph.D. or its equivalent focused in New Testament studies. Moreover, the candidate should have a promising scholarly trajectory, demonstrate interest in teaching a variety of students in both Divinity and GDR programs, welcome opportunities to work with faculty and students across the University, and be open to teaching and collaboration beyond Vanderbilt in programs involving clergy, laity, and public leaders.

Application Instructions

The search committee will begin reviewing applications November 11, 2024. A cover letter, a curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation, and teaching evaluations (if the candidate has taught previously) should be submitted via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/156360. Applicants will be able to establish a free Interfolio Dossier & Portfolio account. Questions and nominations may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Dr. Bruce Morrill (bruce.morrill@vanderbilt.edu).

Appointment to this position is contingent upon completion of a background check process and a determination that the results are satisfactory to Vanderbilt.
