Position Description

The Department of Data Science at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions starting in Fall 2025, with an emphasis in the following areas: 1) Natural Language Processing including LLMs, deep learning methods with text-only or multimodal data; and 2) Applied Machine Learning / Data Science with specific interests in applications to health informatics, medical informatics, or educational data mining. Exceptional candidates in other areas will also be considered.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree by Summer 2025 in a relevant discipline, and outstanding academic credentials that demonstrate their ability to conduct independent world-class research and attract external funding. The successful candidate is also expected to show a commitment to both undergraduate and graduate education.

NJIT is a Carnegie R1 Research University, with over $178M in research expenditures in FY23. The Department of Data Science is a new department launched in Fall 2021, currently has 19 faculty members (of which 7 are jointly appointed) and plans to grow significantly over the next five years. The department includes faculty at all levels including two Distinguished Professors, has faculty with three NSF CAREER awards, one with a DOE CAREER award, active NSF, DOE, and DOD grants, and an NVIDIA AI Lab. The department faculty develop foundational data science methods and conduct research to solve real-world grand challenges that leverage data science in application areas such as FinTech, Health Informatics, and Cybersecurity and play a key role in the NJIT Institute for Data Science, the Center for Big Data, the Cybersecurity Research Center, and the Center for AI Research. The department has strong connections with local industry and works closely with many companies through student Capstone projects, internships, co-ops and joint R&D projects; these include the major high-tech companies (Amazon, Meta, Google, Microsoft) as well as financial / Wall Street companies (Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase) and Pharmaceuticals (Johnson and Johnson, Merck). The Department of Data Science is part of the Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC), alongside the Computer Science Department, which enrolls approximately 2,400 students at all levels across nine programs of study, and the Informatics Department, which enrolls 1,000 students at all levels.  YWCC comprises 37% of the NJIT enrollment, educating more than 4,700 students in computing disciplines, and graduating ~1,000 computing professionals every year. As such, it is the largest producer of computing talent in the tri-state (NY, NJ, CT) area. The Data Science Department is housed in a state-of-the-art facility newly renovated in 2024. The Ying Wu College of Computing is undergoing significant growth as a priority area for NJIT. This growth is an integral part of NJIT’s five-year strategic plan, which calls for consolidating NJIT as a world-class institution of higher education and research.

Applied research, collaboration with industry, innovation and entrepreneurship are encouraged and supported. Performance and tenure expectations align with those of the broader academic computing community, with an emphasis on grant funding and publishing in top conferences and journals. NJIT is located in Newark’s University Heights, a vibrant and sprawling downtown campus close to Rutgers-Newark, New Jersey Innovation Institute, Essex Community College, New Jersey Medical School, University Hospital, and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. NJIT is located in the Newark - Jersey City - New York City metropolitan region and its burgeoning Silicon Alley tech sector. NJIT has recently expanded its graduate programs to Jersey City, just across the Hudson River from the financial district of Lower Manhattan in New York City, where it serves the many working professionals in that region.

Known as The Garden State, New Jersey ranks third in the nation in terms of median household income, features excellent quality of life, and offers a wide range of lifestyle and entertainment options, including urban areas (Newark/ New York metropolitan area), suburban areas (Princeton), oceanfront areas (Atlantic City, the Jersey Shore) and rural / bucolic areas (along the Delaware River in Western New Jersey).  Also, Newark’s Penn Station is on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, which links several metropolitan areas from Washington DC to Boston MA by the Acela high-speed train.
