Position Description

A postdoctoral associate position is available in the Bartesaghi Lab at Duke University to work in the development of image analysis and machine learning methods applied to protein structure determination using single-particle cryo-electron tomography (ET). The candidate will contribute to the design, development, and implementation of strategies to convert noisy tomographic data into high-resolution structures of challenging biomedical targets. Emphasis will be made in the development of scalable strategies required to analyze large datasets of dynamic complexes imaged by modern high-throughput workflows for in-situ cellular tomography.

Development will be carried out within our open-source web-based platform, nextPYP (Liu et al, Nat Meth, 2023), and be tightly integrated with other methods recently developed in the lab, such as MiLoPYP (Huang et al., Nat Meth, 2024).

The Bartesaghi Lab has members spanning across Duke’s Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments, and the School of Medicine. The group emphasizes collaborative and multidisciplinary work and brings together expertise from machine learning, software engineering, and the life sciences.

The group has access to Duke’s TEM facility and dedicated computational resources that are supported and maintained by Duke University's Research Computing unit. This support includes access to a Titan Krios and Tundra TEMs, fast network interconnects, all-flash network storage, high core density CPU servers, and AI-optimized GPUs.

The position is for 2-4 years depending on the candidate’s interests and experience.

Requirements: Ideal candidates should hold a PhD in the area of data science, computer science, bioinformatics, structural biology, or a related area, and have experience in image analysis, machine learning and/or scientific computing.

Informal inquiries should be addressed directly to alberto.bartesaghi@duke.edu

How to Apply: Submit a CV, brief statement of research experience and interests, and the name of two or three references.
