Weizmann Institute of Science, Quantum Materials Transport Lab - Department of Condensed Matter Physics
Quantum Materials Transport Lab led by Yuval Ronen at Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel opens a PhD student position.
Our lab investigates quantum phenomena, focusing on the interplay between correlations and topology. This fascinating interaction allows us to explore unique realizations of abelian and non-abelian anyons that are neither boson- nor fermion-like. Notable phases hosting these quasi-particles include the fractional quantum Hall effect, topological superconductivity, and moiré superlattices (twistronics). We are conducting experiments in these areas to unravel their underlying anyonic physics.
Our research often involves quantum materials, where reduced dimensionality enhances quantum effects. We work with various van der Waals (vdW) materials, such as graphene, hBN, and TMDs, as well as high-mobility GaAs heterostructures, both grown in-house. Device fabrication takes place in a state-of-the-art cleanroom facility designed specifically for vdW material nanofabrication. Our measurements utilize transport techniques, including quantum Hall interferometry, Josephson interferometry, capacitance measurements, thermal transport, and shot noise measurements — all requiring high magnetic fields and low electron temperatures.
The lab is equipped with several low-temperature cryostats: a 15 mK wet dilution refrigerator (DR) with a 20 T magnet, a 10 mK top-loading wet DR with a 12 T magnet, a 7 mK DR with a 9-1-1 T 3D vector magnet, and upcoming 8 mK DR with a 14 T magnet and a variable temperature cryostat (1.5–300 K) with a 12 T magnet.
We seek for curious, self-motivated students with a strong background in condensed matter physics. Experience in dry stacking techniques, nanofabrication, and mesoscopic device cryogenic measurements is advantageous.
