Position Description:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester invites applications for an Experimental Postdoctoral Associate position in the field of high-energy density plasmas. This exciting role focuses on studying plasma turbulence in laboratory astrophysics, with a strong emphasis on plasma jets. The position is expected to start in June 2025 and is initially for 1 year with the possibility of extending for another 1 years subject to satisfactory performance. As a postdoctoral associate, you will engage in cutting-edge research on plasma turbulence using laboratory-based astrophysical experiments. Your primary responsibilities will include: • Experimental Research: Conduct experiments using our state-of-the-art pulsed- power driver, HADES, to investigate plasma turbulence and plasma jets. • Data Analysis: Analyze experimental data collected from Thomson scattering, interferometry, and high-speed cameras. Apply advanced diagnostic tools to measure plasma turbulence directly. • Mentoring: Mentor graduate students, providing guidance and support in their re- search endeavors. • Outreach and DEI Efforts: Actively participate in outreach programs for local high schools and contribute to the Department’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Qualifications: • A Ph.D. in Physics or a related field with a focus on plasma physics, high-energy density physics, or laboratory astrophysics. • Demonstrated experience in experimental plasma research, including the use of diagnostic tools and techniques such as Thomson scattering and interferometry. • Proven ability to analyze complex data sets and work with high-speed imaging systems. • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in mentoring or teaching. • Commitment to outreach and DEI efforts.
