ERC-funded 2+1 postdoctoral position in heavy ion jets theory

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Center for Theoretical Physics (Centre de Physique Théorique, CPHT) of Ecole Polytechnique, located in the Paris area. The successful candidate will join Carlota Andres on the ERC Starting Grant project QGPthroughEECs: The Quark Gluon Plasma through Energy Correlators. The project aims to understand the microscopic dynamics of the quark gluon plasma produced in heavy-ion collisions using an innovative approach based on energy correlators within jets.

Candidate profile:

Applicants should hold a PhD in theoretical high-energy or nuclear physics by the start of their appointment. We welcome applications from candidates with expertise or interest in areas such as QCD for collider physics (including jets and parton showers) and heavy-ion theory or phenomenology. Early-career researchers who have completed or are close to completing their PhD, and whose research interests align with the project’s focus, are especially encouraged to apply.

Offer:

The position is anticipated to start in September/October 2025, with an initial duration of two years and the possibility of a third-year extension based on performance. It includes generous travel support.

About the CPHT:

The CPHT of Ecole Polytechnique brings together researchers working across multiple fields of fundamental and applied physics, including particle physics, string theory, and mathematical physics. The particle physics group at the CPHT focuses on various aspects of QCD, such as small-x, jet quenching and hadron structure. Faculty members in this group include Renaud Boussarie, Cédric Lorcé, Cyrille Marquet, Bernard Pire, and Urko Reinosa. In addition, Ecole Polytechnique is home to the Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet (LLR), where experts in proton-proton and heavy-ion physics contribute to the CMS and LHCb collaborations.

Application:

Applicants are required to include: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, a short research statement (1 to 3 pages) and two or three recommendation letters. For full consideration, applications should be received by December 20, 2024, including all letters of recommendation. For further information about the position, please contact Carlota Andres (carlota.andres-casas@polytechnique.edu).
