The main goal of this program is to provide an exciting and nurturing physics research experience for students, one that will encourage them to pursue careers as research scientists. Each student is paired with a faculty adviser and is often supported by interested postdocs and advanced graduate students. Students participate in a 10-week research program, including in most cases a machine shop course. Students meet weekly to discuss their research progress with the program directors and to attend a lecture series on research opportunities in physics. 

At the end of the 10-week program students present short talks on their research accomplishments and write summary reports on their projects. 

The program will provide a 10-week stipend of $6000, campus housing & meal service, and a travel supplement up to $500. In the event the UW REU program cannot be held in-person, it will be held virtually. 

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: 

Before you begin the application process, please review the University of Washington Privacy Notice and have the following items and information ready as you will be asked to attach the file or enter the information before you can complete your application. 

• A cover letter explaining your interest in our program (file to be attached). 
• An unofficial transcript (file to be attached). If you attended more than one college, it is advisable to have a transcript from each. NOTE: If you are selected to participate in our program, at that time you will be required to provide an official transcript mailed by your college registrar.
• Your GPA for science/math/computer science courses. 
• Your GPA for all courses. 
• The names and email addresses of two professors who can provide letters of recommendation (you may provide more than two if you wish). Follow the instructions on the application page to send an email request to your reference writers for a letter of recommendation. Please let your references know in advance that the email will come from "AcademicJobsOnline.org", so that they do not think it is spam. 

When you have those items ready, click on the "Apply" link above. 

• You will first need to complete the "Standard Coversheet" where you will enter your contact information and the names and email addresses of your references. Please fill in all fields that have a red asterisk and provide information for at least two references. If fields without an asterisk seem confusing or irrelevant, please just leave them blank.
• After you have submitted your "Standard Coversheet", you will be directed to our specific application page to answer additional questions, activate your reference letter requests, and upload your cover letter and transcript. When you have successfully submitted the application page, you should receive an email from the system. 
• After you complete the application, please consider filling out the optional demographic survey. The survey link will be provided to you via email after you submit your application.
• The information requested in the demographic survey will be used to evaluate our program's outreach efforts. All responses will remain anonymous. Participation in the demographic survey is not required to complete your REU application.

The application deadline (including references) is February 21, 2025, 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time. Early application is recommended. 

We will begin making offers around mid-February, and hope to complete the process by mid-March.
